Does Sugar Cause Cancer?
The notion that sugar causes cancer originates from the observation that glucose, a form of carbohydrate, can promote cancer growth processes. However, this is not entirely true because while glucose can be a factor in fueling cancer growth, it is not the sole source of energy for cancer cells. Glucose is broken down into various molecules that can enter different metabolic pathways to support growth. Cancer cells can also generate their own glucose through processes like gluconeogenesis, even in low glucose environments. Therefore, cutting off external sources of glucose may not necessarily starve cancer cells as they can obtain glucose from other molecules within the body.
