Computers in the early 90s did not come with TCP IP built into the operating system, requiring the purchase of a separate TCP IP stack. Unix workstations, though not consumer products due to high costs, had internet networking built-in. Gopher, Waze, and the World Wide Web competed as online efforts for new internet user interfaces in the early 90s. Gopher was menu-based, Waze was a precursor to search engines like Google, and the World Wide Web introduced the concept of hypertext linking on the internet, built on old ideas from the 50s and 60s.
