California Grizzly Bear
Grizzlies and brown bears are the same genus and species, but there are subspecies within them. California's grizzly bear numbered over 10,000 before the discovery of gold nuggets in Northern California in the mid-1800s. By 1924, every California grizzly bear had been hunted and killed. A California grizzly still adorns our state flag.
