With the potential dangers of AGIs and Aeon, the absence of regulations and oversight in building and releasing such powerful technology is concerning. Our past track record with powerful technology is not reassuring, as demonstrated by close calls with nukes. If AGIs and Aeon become open source, the risks would escalate. Unlike the strict regulations for selling a sandwich, there are no controls or stakeholders overseeing the development and distribution of AGIs. It is solely in the hands of a small number of private companies.

AI is here to stay, but at what cost? Connor Leahy is the CEO of Conjecture, a mission-driven organization that’s trying to make the future of AI go as well as it possibly can. He is also a Co-Founder of EleutherAI, an open-source AI research non-profit lab.
