Soft skills, initially categorized by the US Army, originated from distinguishing between manual (hard) and behavioral (soft) skills for soldiers. Hard skills involved working with machines made of metal such as operating tanks and guns, while all other skills like leadership and collaboration were labeled as soft skills. Contrary to the negative connotation, soft skills are essentially behavioral skills necessary for effective functioning, indicating a potential difference in perception had they been termed differently like 'leadership skills.'
Psychologist Adam Grant stops by to talk with Maya about his new book "Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things." They talk about how to filter out unhelpful feedback, the benefits of imperfectionism, and why we need to give soft skills more respect.
