NOTE

Magic Numbers in Nuclei and their Stability

Magic numbers in physics refer to the specific numbers of protons or neutrons needed to complete shells in nuclei. When a shell is filled, nuclei are bound and more stable. Nuclei that have this property for both protons and neutrons are called doubly magic. Helium is an example of a doubly magic nucleus with 2 neutrons and 2 protons. Oxygen 16 is another doubly magic nucleus.
