Evolutionary pressure forced human sleep to become efficient and shorter in duration when they moved from sleeping in trees to on solid ground. This transition allowed for a doubling of REM sleep dreaming time, increasing from around 9% to 20-25% of the night. This change enabled hominids to fully experience body-immobilizing REM sleep, propelling Homo sapiens to the top of the evolutionary pyramid. REM sleep became instrumental in supporting the unique features that define human beings compared to other primates.
