Disassociating mitochondrial function and content: Exploring the relationship

Increasing mitochondrial function is traditionally believed to be directly correlated with the number of mitochondria. However, recent findings suggest that this may not always be the case. Lower volumes or intensities of exercise result in a greater increase in mitochondrial content than function. On the other hand, high-intensity interval training leads to a greater increase in function compared to content.
