Experiments conducted in Canada and by Melissa Hunt et al. support the hypothesis that the arrival of high-speed wireless internet and heavy social media use is linked to increased severe mental health diagnoses among teenage girls. Additionally, a randomized control trial found that limiting social media use led to significant reductions in loneliness and depression in the experimental group.
