The Relationship Between Cynicism and Intelligence
A large study conducted in 2018 aimed to test the belief that cynical people are more intelligent. The study involved 200,000 people from 30 countries and found the opposite to be true - cynical people tend to have lower IQ and perform poorly on cognitive tests. The researchers proposed that cynicism serves as an evolutionary heuristic to protect individuals from betrayal and treachery of their own expectations.
