Monitoring Inflammation and Biomarkers in Disease
Inflammation is a common factor in many medical conditions, but there is a distinction between diet-related inflammation and disease-related inflammation in the magnitude of change in biomarkers. Biomarkers are objectively measured characteristics that indicate normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or responses to interventions. However, clear recommendations on which biomarkers to use and how to interpret their changes are lacking, particularly in relation to diet. In monitoring inflammation, common tests include vital signs like temperature, blood tests for white blood cell count, platelet count, ferritin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Specific organ or disease-related tests may also be used to evaluate inflammation in particular areas of the body.
