Recognizing Reality Unveils the Barriers to Virtue
The barriers to recognizing our inherent virtue stem from the five kleshas, or afflictions, which cloud our understanding and experience of reality. The first klesha is ignorance of the difference between perceived and fundamental reality, leading to confusion between what is real and what is illusory. The second involves grasping at transient experiences, creating a suffocating attachment to impermanence, similar to attempting to hold one's breath. This clinging replaces genuine engagement with life with a mere conceptual model of it. The third klesha signifies a recoil from impermanence, while the fourth pertains to identifying oneself with the ego, or the 'selfie', leading to a distorted self-perception. The fifth klesha, the fear of death, encapsulates a fundamental anxiety that entangles with the previous afflictions. Addressing the first klesha can unravel the entanglement of all five, emphasizing the need for clarity and understanding to engage authentically with life and virtue.
