Mental ill health is the extra layer of suffering we impose on ourselves, often a projection of past events. English psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott suggests that the catastrophe we fear has already happened, but we have forgotten it. It's helpful to identify our fears and connect them to past experiences. This exercise reveals that our future apprehensions are often rooted in the past.
