The demographic calculation behind Sharon's withdrawal from Gaza
In 2005, Sharon acknowledged that they couldn't win demographically in a concentrated area, so he saw the withdrawal as a demographic consolidation. He and his co-thinkers viewed the state in terms of racial demographics and saw a depopulation campaign as the solution. They saw it as a compromise but were prepared for military resistance. However, they may face unexpected challenges.
