During the early stages of the war, people in Gaza were able to find rice and vegetables to eat. However, as aid became less frequent, food supplies dwindled, making flour scarce and expensive. With no food left, they resorted to mixing water with starch for one meal a day. To alleviate hunger, they started grinding up animal food like rabbit food, bird food, hay, and fodder to make dry and unpleasant bread. Despite the terrible taste and smell, they attempted to improve it by creating desserts and savory dishes using unconventional ingredients like corn mill and rabbit food. One notable attempt was making maftul, the Palestinian version of couscous, from animal feed.
