The Distinction Between Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia
The distinction between mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia is subjective, as it depends on the level of cognitive impairment that affects daily functioning. An example is Pat Summitt, the head coach of the women's Tennessee basketball team, who was diagnosed with dementia while still coaching. Her version of mild dementia was better than my best day. Some patients may appear unchanged for years if all they do is watch TV, but others may struggle with daily tasks. An example was a patient with mild dementia who had difficulty writing 30-page grant applications.
