The observation that people tend to act more when they witness suffering locally compared to when it is far away is attributed to human evolution in small communities where harm or help was directly connected to individuals nearby, leading to a lack of appropriate reactions for the vast globalized world. The disconnect between the impact we can have on people far away and our intuitive reactions is a challenge to address by aligning how we feel with the good that can be done.
