NOTE

Determinants of an Emperor's Reputation

The reputation of an emperor is often influenced by the accounts of ancient historians, who may attempt to either vilify or glorify the emperor in question. However, the most significant factor in shaping an emperor's reputation is the outcome of their succession. If the succeeding emperor benefits from portraying their predecessor in a positive light, they are likely to do so, regardless of the actual character of the previous ruler. Conversely, if an emperor is assassinated, the successor has an interest in legitimizing the assassination. Therefore, the actions and interests of the emperors' successors heavily impact how history remembers them.
