Choose Efficiency Over Frequency
In the U.S., multiple IV iron formulations are available, including ferric, leukinate, iron sucrose, and low molecular weight iron dextran, all of which demonstrate comparable efficacy and safety profiles. The primary aspect that differentiates these formulations is the duration of infusion and the number of required visits to achieve a one-gram iron dosage. Notably, iron sucrose, while effective, necessitates up to five visits, contrasting with formulations like iron dextran and monopharic, which can deliver the needed iron in a single session. However, monopharic is notably more expensive. It is essential to recognize that most IV iron products have similar side effects, simplifying considerations for patients, yet some variations exist that warrant attention.
