Challenge Assumptions to Overcome Anxiety
Long-term change, especially in managing anxiety and depression, hinges on the willingness to learn and scrutinize personal beliefs. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) employs skepticism to counter cynicism by encouraging individuals to question their negative assumptions. For instance, when someone believes all their friends dislike them, a therapist will prompt them to examine the evidence for this claim. By fostering an unbiased evaluation of their experiences, individuals can challenge black-and-white thinking. Engaging in behavioral experiments, such as inviting friends to an outing, allows them to gather concrete evidence regarding their social standing. This approach emphasizes processing positive experiences and leads to significant improvements in mental health.
