Strict vegan diets may lead to a higher risk of neurological conditions later in life, as emerging data suggests. The competition in the enzymes in the liver for converting omega-3 to omega-6 may limit the conversion from alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to DHA. While vegans consume a lot of ALA from walnuts and flax, the simultaneous intake of omega-6 from sources like soy may diminish this conversion. Flaxseed appears to have the best omega-6 to omega-3 ratio among vegan dietary sources.
