Efficiency of Land Routes vs Maritime Routes for Shipping
Land-based projects in Latin America may not be able to lure significant traffic away from the Panama Canal due to longer unloading times onto trains and trucks, making the entire journey much longer than maritime routes. In comparison, the established railroad across America may be a more favorable option for shipping firms if land routes become necessary. However, these land routes could serve a purpose in case of capacity issues at the Panama Canal or the Suez Canal in the future, due to potential security problems and climate change.
