OpenAI faced challenges and disappointment with the failure of their project called Ithicus, which caused some executives at Microsoft to be disappointed. This setback showed that even AI pioneers like OpenAI can face vulnerabilities. Despite this failure, OpenAI continues to prioritize bringing down costs and improving model efficiency. Additionally, OpenAI has been in conversations for additional fundraising, with a tender offer of employee shares at a valuation of $86 billion. OpenAI is expected to raise $100 billion along its path to building AGI. In terms of product releases, OpenAI may introduce new AI agent tools at their developer day, but they are unsure about releasing a tool to detect AI-generated images. Previous detection tools had low accuracy and contributed to false positives in detecting AI usage by students, causing problems in the education field. However, OpenAI's AI image detection tool shows promising accuracy of 99% according to the CTO.
In a rare miss, OpenAI had to shutter their Arrakis model earlier this year. They had hoped that the model would bring GPT-4 level performance with lower cost and more efficiency, but it simply didn't. NLW also looks at rumors of Apple AI coming to iOS 18.
