In situations where a patient is not improving, there needs to be a family discussion about what the patient is willing to endure. If a week on a ventilator is not considered life for the patient or their family, it may be decided to remove the breathing tube and let them be comfortable, even if it shortens their life. Over 85% of people have limits to what they are willing to endure for a longer life. The role of the clinician is not only to provide medical information, but also to advocate for the patient's wishes.
