The perception of being irreplaceable due to one's exceptional performance can lead to a weakness for the organization. It can cause the organization to become overly reliant on the individual, making it weaker if something were to happen to them. This phenomenon is driven by talent, longevity, and leadership habits, and individuals should periodically assess if their presence has become a weakness and consider if it's time to make a shift to prevent this from happening.
If leaders stand in one place long enough, the organization will eventually organize around them. In this episode from 2014, I discuss three contributing factors to strategic presence and how to ensure it doesn't become a problem.
