Acetaminophen and Activated Charcoal: A Decontaminating Dose

Use activated charcoal in early presentation of acetaminophen overdose, up to 2 hours after exposure. A 4-hour acetaminophen level is recommended, but delayed-release and other medications may affect absorption. The dose of activated charcoal should ideally be 10 times the amount of the drug ingested, but in practicality, a decontaminating dose of 1-2 bottles is reasonable for the average adult patient.
