Crypto is the idea that these distributed ledgers are not controlled by a single govern rnment or company. There's a techno libertarian political argument for what you gain from this decentralization, but I don't think most people care about that. We know how to have consistent distributed data stores. This is what distributed data bases do. So it's not like there's a new technological capability that is introduced by crypto based block chains. It's just there's a decentralization that comes with it, and that the value of that is largely political, not technological.
