Researchers found that mortality rates were more than twice as high in the first week after release from prison compared to a month later, with alcohol and drug poisoning being the leading cause of death in most countries examined. The exception was Brazil, where violence was the primary cause. The high risk is likely due to enforced abstinence in prison leading to heightened vulnerability upon release.
