The Israelis Are in a Tough Spot

The goal of the attack is unclear, but it seems to aim at undoing the progress made in the peace process in recent years. Israel has the right to dismantle Hamas, a terrorist organization committed to destroying Israel. However, Hamas can hide among civilians, making it difficult for Israel to target them without causing civilian casualties. Ground forces would face a tough guerrilla war in densely populated areas. Reacting excessively could escalate the conflict to a regional or even a world war. Wise leadership should counsel against such a reaction to protect Israel's interests.
