In medieval England, bailiffs were notorious for enforcing labor laws, leading to widespread hatred. Sir John Gildspera, the speaker of the House of Commons, was a radical figure in 1376, appointed to represent MPs in reigning in an avaricious mistress of Edward III. Gildspera's commission summoned representatives from neighboring villages to demand money, leading to defiance from Thomas Baker of Fobbing, who declared that no more taxes would be paid as they had already fulfilled their tax obligations.
