The Cost of Control w/Sharon Hodde Miller

Most of us carry the belief that if we could be in control of the people and circumstances around us then life would be better. This belief leads to us exerting massive amounts of energy into controlling everyone and everything. But, somehow our attempts to control our life usually end up hurting and not helping. Can you relate? Today we chat with author, speaker, and church planter Sharon Hodde Miller about her new book The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, the Anxiety It Gives Us, and the Real Power God Promises. Sharon shares biblical truth to help us realize we are not in control and that’s a good thing! She also shares about the tools God gives us to help us cope and find peace in our out of control world. Come chat with us as we discuss the Cost of Control with Sharon Hodde Miller. The opinions of guests on the Daily Grace podcast do not represent the opinions of The Daily Grace Co., and we do not necessarily endorse the resources that they recommend or mention on the show. We believe it is valuable to hear from a variety of guests, even if we do not agree in all areas. As always, the statements made by hosts and guests on the show should be tested against God’s Word, the only authority on truth. Overcoming People Pleasing

Sometimes caring for others can become a crisis in our lives. We can become so consumed with pleasing the people around us that our main function in life becomes to meet the needs and expectations of others. And while this initially seems like a selfless way to live, it is actually often a self-centered way to live. We crave the approval and acceptance of others so much that we will sacrifice anything and everything to get it. People pleasing can easily become an idol. So, how do we recognize when serving others has become our god? And how can we recenter our lives on God instead of the opinions of others? Come chat with us as we discuss how Scripture and ultimately the gospel helps us overcome fear of man and people pleasing.   Sign up for the brand new Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.”   Time Stamps:   0:48 - Favorite things 3:57 - Defining people pleasing and fear of man 6:02 - When serving others becomes self-centered 8:52 - Recognizing people pleasing in our lives 12:00 - The root of people pleasing 14:43 - What Scripture says about people pleasing 19:39 - Practical tips to overcome people pleasing 22:45 - People pleasing and the gospel   Favorite Things:   Nonstop Tuberous Begonias Geocaching   Mentioned in this episode:   Encyclopedia of Biblical Counseling “How Do We Recover From Being People Pleasers?” Video Clip When People Are Big and God is Small Book Preaching the Gospel to Yourself Study Daily He Leads Me Notepad   Scripture in this episode:   Galatians 1:10 Proverbs 29:25 Hebrews 12:1-2 Psalm 56:3-4 Hebrews 4:15 Romans 5:17-18 Related Resources:   Blog: Whom Shall I Fear? Letting Go of Perfectionism

Many women feel constant pressure to be perfect in all areas of their lives. And because of this pressure, we push ourselves to our limits trying to be (or appear) perfect. But, perfectionism is oftentimes rooted in love of self. It is the outworking of the wrongful belief that we can earn our way into God’s good graces. If we want to have a thriving relationship with God, we need to deal with our perfectionism so that He alone is the standard of perfection in our lives. Come chat with us about the roots of perfectionism, how we can identify it in our lives, when we should repent of the idol of perfectionism, and how the grace of Jesus covers all our imperfections and failures.
