Sleep

Are you someone that values your sleep?Or are you a parent who day dreams about nights that you 'slept through' or had a 'lie in'?!Whichever you count yourself as - alcohol will be playing a role in affecting your sleep. No matter how much or how little you drink...In fact, not only will alcohol affect the quality of your sleep - it also plays an integral role to your sobriety and your avoidance of a relapse. If you ask 1000 newly sober people what benefits they have felt in the early days of giving up the grog - we would guess that almost all of them would mention better sleep! In today's episode Hame and Vic take a deeper look into the science of sleep and its importance to our mental and physical health. We certainly aren't scientists but we can confirm we are far nicer people to be around after a good nights sleep. We do not miss the room spinning, the loo seat naps or the 3am wake ups feeling wide awake and unable to get back down. We also binge on a lot less chocolate and a little less Netflix when we aren't feeling exhausted and hungover.(We promise that this will not be as boring as most of the conversations two parents have about sleep! Although we have had many conversations like this dull enough to put us to sleep so ... silver linings and all that!)Enjoy the episode! This episode of Sober Awkward is brought to you by leading Grey Area Drinking coach Sarah Rusbatch. The Soberversary

It's Vic's special day! 5 years since she gave up the grog and it's taken her all that time to learn how to best celebrate sobriety milestones.Today Vic and Hamish discuss plans for their sober birthdays, talk way too much about turnips and uncover why 'going large' on your soberversary can leave you and your piggy back a little disappointed and ensure your soberversary goes off with less of a bang... and more of a quiet high five with someone that cares.Vic also reflects on the past 5 years and Hamish shares those all important dates from his sober app (and probably too much information about Ed Sheeran's foot).Anyway.....whether you are about to celebrate 30 days, 100 days, or the big 1 year - this episode will give you food for thought. A hot air balloon ride perhaps? A long walk? a dinner out? or a very expensive massage from an aggressive lady? It's up to you.Come and feel the sober birthday awkward and do it anyway!Tickets for show - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sober-awkward-live-recording-tickets-545661968637?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=escbResources JOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward! https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free Social Network for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – Sobriety Courses – Sober Groups, Tea and loads more.Buy Sober Tea! www.cuppashop.com@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy@cuppa.community @hamishadamscairns @patreon @spotifyIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. Years when drinking for a bit of 'fun' - soon turns into an uncontrollable habit. Universities seemed to be designed for exactly this reason!Over the course of today's episode Hame and Vic will take a look behind why we drank to excess at Uni, what the dangers are and why students today are inspiring them to better themselves!ResourcesJOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free SocialNetwork for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy– SobrietyCourses – Sober Groups, Tea and loads more.Buy Sober Tea! www.cuppashop.com@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy @cuppa.community@hamishadamscairns @patreon @spotifyIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol pleasereach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a closefriend. Grief

Grief and alcohol have sadly been intrinsically linked for as long as we can remember. It has somehow become as commonplace to get drunk at a funeral as it is at a wedding!?Losing somebody you love can be one of the toughest things you can go through in your life. As a result, many sadly turn to the bottle. It might cost you your sobriety or it might be the trigger that begins an unhealthy relationship with alcohol altogether. Here's the news flash though - alcohol will not help 'take the edge off' your grief.Grief is too big, too all encompassing for alcohol to 'fix'.In fact, it will only lengthen the painful process. Grief must be experienced sober in order to be fully processed. We aren't saying it's easy. And we certainly aren't judging anyone that over drinks during a traumatic period of their life.Vic and Hamish are instead here to try and learn lessons from those who have experienced grief more than them.We share some of the tips and tricks we have picked up along the way.And Hamish takes a look at how we might improve our skills in helping others through their grief so they never feel the need to resort to drinking.ResourcesHamish's grief podcast is called 'Extraordinary Ordinary People'JOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free SocialNetwork for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – SobrietyCourses – Sober Groups, Tea and loads more.Buy Sober Tea! www.cuppashop.com@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy @cuppa.community@hamishadamscairns @patreonIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. The People Pleaser

Did you drink to fit in? Is this because you wanted people to like you? Does it matter? After a few months of getting sober the true you begins to sneak out from under that big safe layer of booze. You begin to question yourself and seek answers as to why you act in the way you do. It's confronting, and very exciting. Finding authenticity and letting go of being a people pleaser are both part of this process. In this vulnerable episode of Sober Awkward, Vic reveals some of her more extreme people pleasing ways and why she feels being overly friendly can leave her swimming in a mucky pond of disappointment. Whereas Hamish thinks people pleasing is a form of good manners, a need to be kind to others and fit in to society,Either way, both Vic and Hame see that some of there intricate personality traits often mean they end up missing out on time with thier families. They are way too reliable, can never say no, or are too busy buying gifts for random strangers. So today, they are both learning on the go, trying to understand their people pleasery and step in to a world in which they no longer care what anyone thinks about them. Sound awkward? Yes! but with a few awful stories, some chat about socks and a barrel of giggles, anything is possible!ResourcesJOIN PATREON! and buy us a Cuppa so we can keep being awkward!https://www.patreon.com/user?u=81897291www.cuppa.community – The Free Social Network for the Sober and Sober Curious - Sober Events – Therapy – Sobriety Courses – Sober Groups, Tea and loads more.Buy Sober Tea! www.cuppashop.com@soberawkward @drunkmummysobermummy @cuppa.community @hamishadamscairns @patreonIf you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol please reach out to your local doctor, a therapist, AA Group or just chat to a close friend. Why One Will Hurt

The podcast discusses the temptation to have 'just one drink' after staying sober, the dangers of moderation, the deceptive nature of alcohol addiction, and the benefits of embracing sobriety. It explores failed attempts at moderation, the long-term effects of alcohol, and the freedom that comes with choosing complete abstinence over moderation.
