Joe Williams: Finding My Purpose Through Sobriety
Joe Williams has lived numerous lives.Google him and you will find out that he is an multi-sport Australian athlete and a proud Wiradjuri/Wolgalu, First Nations Aboriginal man.But there is so much more to his story...After succeeding in his life long dream of playing professional NRL and after a long battle with drugs, alcohol, suicidal ideations and Bi Polar disorder, Joe got sober and retired after just four seasons. As one door closes, another opens and Joe walked into a boxing gym that would dramatically change his life.Boxing gave him the discipline and structure that his rugby career lacked and he would go on to forge a successful career as a boxer. From the outside everything seemed to be going smoothly, but as we have seen over and over again, going sober doesn't fix all of the underlying issues. Only doing the work can fix those! In 2012, Joe found himself in a psychiatric ward after an attempted suicide - a day that he described as the most important day of his life.Soon after surviving that day, Joe found his purpose which was to help people who struggle with mental illness.Today he is an author, a motivational speaker and workshop leader who uses his lived experience and the lessons that he has learnt from the oldest living civilisation on the planet to change the lives of people all over the world.I have no doubt his story will motivate and inspire you as much as it did me during this conversation!Thank you Joe!Show NotesJoe's website:https://www.joewilliams.com.au/Joe's Instagram: @joewilliams_tewFounder of @theenemywithin_ and @ourway_academyVic's book is out! How to Make Time Your Biggest Motivator
Whether you are aware of it or not, Time is one of the biggest subjects within sobriety. In the early days it seems to crawl past but its not long before the days on your time counting apps are accumulating faster than you can imagine. The question is what can you do to make time a motivator rather than a constant reminder of it slowly slipping through your fingers.Does our perception of time change when we go sober and is time simply a human constructed illusion?!That's right...things get Meta this episode and Hame and Vic even quote Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dickens and very niche 1990s British TV shows!Enjoy!Show NotesVic's book is out! Did Years of Drinking Damage My Brain?

Does Building Self-Esteem in Teens stop them Leaning on Booze?
If we raise kids that have high self-esteem will this make them less likely to drink alcohol? This episode is for the parents out there that are feeling scared about their kids becoming teens, going off the rails, drinking cider in farmers fields and putting themselves at risk because of bad teenage choices. This is also for anyone who was this child (lets guess at about 98% of our audience!) was it your low self esteem that caused you to reach for the bottle and would life have been different if our parents had taught us to simply love who we are?Today Vic and Hame talk about about how they felt as teens, why they rebelled and why they felt 'less than' growing up? Don't worry, after they've bored you with all their angsty teen insecurities they'll turn it all around and find out why instilling good values and some good old self worth into our kids might mean they are less likely to follow a drunken crowd and make wiser choices by themselves.Get your biro's out Mums and Dads. Are you a Beer Bully?
Vic knows a lot about beer bullies... due to the fact she was one.She used to force, anyone that wasn't joining in with 'the fun' into downing a pint. She's not proud of it, but her past indiscretions mean that in today's episode you get deep insight as to why non-drinkers get bullied into having 'just one' and what the bullies will say to convince you to have a tipple to two.Vic and Hamish will also go over some brilliant responses that will hopefully stop the 'Tequila Tormentors ' in their tracks. Oh, and watch out! There are some very bad cockney accents and some unrelated talk of coat hangers in bums. It's quality stuff guys!
