Hoovering - Episode 51: Sofie Hagen
Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week my guest is one of the high emperors of European podcasting, the amazing comedian and now author, Sofie Hagen. We check I’m not racist, share harrowing fireworks trauma and then get tits deep into fat activism and I learn a bunch about the difference between ‘fat liberation’ and ‘body positivity’ - I’ll be honest, I’m absolutely down with both but Sofie makes some fierce and always very funny points. Everything written below in CAPITALS is a link to the relevant webpage. Tickets to see Hoovering LIVE in 201916th FEB - MAPS Festival, NEWCASTLE 3rd MARCH - LONDON. Vaults Festival30th MARCH - GLASGOW International Comedy Festival RecipesI made us a beautiful (if I don’t say so myself) aubergine, apple, walnut and toasted cumin salad which I found online. The recipe is HERE. And the tasty plantain chips we had were from PURELY, I’ll be straight up though, they were a rip off from PLANET ORGANIC. I love that shop so much, it’s like heaven - both in terms of how nice it is and regards how much it’s somewhere I just have to aspire to be able to spend any serious amount of my time one day in the future. Honourable MentionsHer book is out in May but you can pre-order it now and there’s a stand up and book tour surrounding that which I implore you to go and see Sofie at and check out her podcasts: Made of Human and the Secret Dinosaur Cult. The easiest way to get all those things is by going to Sofie’s WEBSITE.This picture of what Danes call VIENNA BREAD will make your eyes cum. If you haven’t eaten a CHICKEN SUPERNOODLE you haven’t lived. The Danish sandwich place Sofie mentions in London is SCANDINAVIAN KITCHEN and the swanky restaurant is SNAPS + RYEHere’s a DANISH APPLE CAKE which actually looks quite a lot like a Dorset apple cake. We cover veganism, love, putting burgers and jam on a pizza, the Leicester food scene and also just as a bit of a bonus I have an argument with a really sexy fly. ANYTHING IN CAPITALS IN THESE PODCAST NOTES IS A LINK TO A HELPFUL WEBPAGETickets to see Hoovering LIVE in 201916th FEB - MAPS Festival, Newcastle 3rd MARCH - London. Vaults Festival30th MARCH - Glasgow International Comedy Festival RecipesI made the recipe up for what we ate but essentially it was vegan shepherds pie with roasted veg. The pie was a base of brown and green whole lentils cooked very slowly with onions, celery, tiny carrots, herbs and then stock reduced until the lentils were firm but it was in a sort of gravy. Then the top was mashed sweet potatoes because that’s what I had in. The roasted veg was broccoli and halved sprouted done for 25 mins. Honourable MentionsGO AND SEE GRACE PETRIE doing tour support for Frank Turner or on the Lefty Scum Tour in March. And please please come and see me in Leicester too! I’m there doing my new show, in preview on FRI 22nd FEB and SAT 23rd FEB and I would so love to have you in the audience. It’s a fiver. Here’s a link to musician, Grace’s partner HANNAH JAMES’ website In case we were saying it wrong this is what a PUY LENTIL is. Grace strongly endorses Leicester eating places called THAI ESARN for Thai food, obvs and for tapas head to BARCELONETA and of course the totally incredible sounding MCINDIANSWe talk about British breakfast cereals RICE CRISPIES, SHREDDED WHEAT and WEETABIXAnd HERE is that article Grace mentioned from the excellent David Mitchell.
