17: The Scents of Herbal Essences
We all remember THOSE commercials — the orgasmic shower scenes inspired not from a highly pressurized hose attachment but the euphoric scent of...Herbal Essences shampoo. Its bright, fruity, and floral scent wafted from every hair flip and ponytail swish of the 90s and early aughts (and before that as well but we weren't alive then) and remains one of the most memorable haircare scents today.
Proctor & Gamble's master perfumer and senior perfumers (respectively), Zerlina Dubois and Stacy Hertenstein come on the pod to talk about how that Herbal Essences scent came to be, how creating a shampoo scent is much more complex than creating a fine fragrance, how scent trends are researched and created, and how those have a lot more to do with what's going on in the world than you might initially expect.

16: Every Kiss Begins With Krigler
The word "iconic" gets thrown around a lot. So does the word "literally." Well, prepare for an encore when we tell you that Krigler is literally one of the most iconic fragrance houses in the WORLD. Their exquisite juices have spritzed the necks of royalty (American and otherwise), celebrity, Oscar winners, literary icons, and also the iconically wealthy. Hepburn, Kelly, Dietrich, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Kennedy — Krigler truly is the scent of ICONS. Ben Krigler, the great great (great?) grandson of Albert Krigler, who founded the brand in 1904, came on the pod to talk with us about the unique magique of Krigler fragrances and how his humble family business went from hotel boutiques to a beloved brand for scent enthusiasts wherever they are in the world. (Kind of like Succession but with less familial extortion and more perfume.)

15: It's Demeter's World And We're Just Smelling It
Dirt. Holy Water. Angel Food Cake. Puppy's Breath. Demeter's fragrance library could easily be a word association card game, but far greater than that, they're a catalog of singular scents bottled for your enjoyment and curiosity.
One day in the future when the Earth is ruled by hand-slapping robots who have evolved past their AI and every imaginable scent throughout time and history is archived in a library like something out of The Giver (but for smells), Demeter will have already done most the legwork. With a collection of over 300 fragrances, they've captured the joys of experiencing any memorable element of a scent, all concocted by maestro of (scent)memory and founder Mark Crames, who joins us on the pod to discuss all things Demeter.

14: A Very Scent-sational Gift Guide
It's the most capitalist time of the year! Haha! But honestly how else would we show our nears and dears just how much we care about them if not via material items with indisputable monetary valuations? OK, but for real though, not to brag — these gifts are actually really good. We've outdone ourselves. They're delightful, functional, and they all smell incredible (duh). Like, you COULD just get them for yourself but...look, we're not the boss of you. Your brilliant hosts have curated a gift guide SO COMPREHENSIVE that you won't even REALIZE how good your lives could've been smelling until this thoughtful and clever episode aired.

13: Falling BACK Into The GAP Scents
This episode features the ultimate anti-aging ingredient: a concentrated dose of Nostalgia. Today we’re taking a trip back to middle school (sorry) with the six GAP Scent fragrances. Yes, THOSE fragrances. We deep dive into six of the originals, pulling apart what makes them so unique, so iconic, and why they’re seared into our collective consciousness. And best of all, we’ll clue you in on how you can get your hands on them (because they never really left).

12: The COMMODITY Comeback
Commodity was one of the first fragrance brands to launch on the Internet, pioneering the fragrance DTC model. And then, a few years after its launch, it vanished. Quietly, suddenly, tragically. And now... IT'S BACK. The re-founder and CEO Vicken Arslanian joins us to talk about rebooting the beloved brand, breathing new life into it without changing its DNA, and even Commodity 2.0's debut scent.

11: Malin + Goetz Is For Lovers
Dark Rum. Cannabis. Peppermint. No, not the remnants of a hotel room Hunter S. Thompson just checked out of — these are some of the Hall of Fame scents slung by the chic and minimalist lifestyle brand Malin + Goetz. Peek into any shower in a 1BR in Chelsea and chances are you've seen a bottle of Malin + Goetz body products. Chances are you and your S.O. have fought over and then shared said body products, replenishing in equal measure, to keep the bottle count low and the suds plentiful. We talk to the eponymous founders about how and why they created a simple, elegant, and functional solution to bathroom clutter while elevating the entire concept of putting stuff on your body at all with the most invigorating and memorable scents.

10: Boy Smell(s) Ya Later
You mean to tell me a boy made this smell??
Matthew Herman, the co-founder of everyone’s favorite candle brand, Boy Smells, joins us to talk about creating the candle brand with his partner David, pivoting from fashion to fragrance (and underwear), what happens when Kacey Musgraves slides into your DMs (the Slow Burn collaboration, that's what) and why a “genderful” lifestyle is so much more enriching than genderless.

9: The Smell of Death
Happy Halloweek, smellheads. For this episode, we're taking you someplace fascinatingly disgusting and morbidly evitable — DEATH. We spoke with writer and neuroscientist Mo Costandi about that certain je ne sais quoi of the bouquet of death as we delve into what exactly remains of your remains once you've embarked onto the afterlife. We also learn about how the stench of death can be helpful in forensic and psychiatric applications. It's a lot!! This is not for the squeamish and it does get graphic, just FYI. For more science, find Mo Costandi on Twitter at @mocost and https://neurophilosophy.wordpress.com/. Read more about what death smells like here: https://mosaicscience.com/story/smell-death/

Internet tastemaker, podcast superstar, and candle vlog darling, T. Kyle, joins us to talk candle vlogs, the formative (and homophobic) smells of his teen years growing up in New Jersey, and his most cherished New York City scents. He teaches us the 101 basics of candle lingo and how to stop your expensive candles from burning in that annoyingly wasteful way (you know the one). Binge T.
