A Journey of Power, Faith, and Fulfillment with former NFL DT Jeremy Towns
"People who tend to help other people tend to live the most fulfilled life." Former NFL Defensive Tackle, and current medical student, Jeremy Towns, joins Dr. Bhrett McCabe to discuss his journey through life, school, and the NFL. From a young age, Towns had to face challenges that most 13 year olds would run away from, but instead of bowing out, he stood up to his circumstances. Jeremy talks about the mindset he needed throughout his high school and college years on and off the field. "Anytime you put talent with working hard then you have a chance for unbelievable results." This proved true as he made his way to the NFL after his years at Samford University training under coach Pat Sullivan. He then found himself faced with an unfamiliar challenge, one of confidence. On this podcast, Towns explains his journey through the power of faith and how God has fueled him to make a dent in society starting in his college years, "Once I believed that I'm supposed to be here, it was another level of success." With 2 season-ending injuries, and 3 NFL teams later, Towns is now a medical student driven by a purpose to help others. "My goal is inspiration and hope," Towns explains, and through the power of his faith and mental endurance, Jeremy Towns will continue to create a movement that is continuing to spread in Alabama. Brett Bartholomew: The Intangibles of Great Coaches
In his new book, "Conscious Coaching," author, Brett Bartholomew, exposes a relevant gap in the strength and conditioning world. The connection between a coach and their athlete. "You can have all the books marked in the world, but you don't know how to connect with people. What's it worth in this world?" In the sport's world, we are all often focused on the result. From the number on the bar we squat to the number of in-season wins, we are focused on the product rather than being focused on all the moving parts that help a team achieve that product. Bartholomew digs into the intangibles that are needed for a coach to become a great mentor to his athletes. He simply states, "The number of blogs read isn't the equivalent to the number of groups led." The MindSide Podcast is honored to have Bartholomew in front of the mic this week to engage in conversation highlighting the social, emotional, and intellectual effects of coaching. Enjoy!

CDH is a birth defect in which the diaphragm of an infant does not completely form, this leads to the entrapment of major organs in the diaphragm area, slowing developmental growth for the child. Now through 8 major surgeries, his first being when he was nothing but 18 hours old, Moscona's son is "doing well by his standards." The journey of a parent with a special needs child is one of many challenges, but Matt Moscona has found his "normal" in it all. According to Moscona, we must all "learn to develop our own normal." The Fast and the Curious with SuperSpeed Golf
There is genius in simplicity. This week's podcast spotlight shines on two innovation leaders, Kyle Shay and Michael Napoleon who have established their company on this widely known ideal. Shay and Napoleon are the founders of SuperSpeed Golf, a systematic, innovative golf program that has integrated unique principles of speed training to help improve club speed. Michael and Kyle built SuperSpeed Golf with the purpose of offering a simple, goal-based training system that is easy to follow and easy to implement. With the numerous coaching techniques and detailed analytical training that is out in the golf industry today athletes sometimes can lose their "athletic nature" in a variety of complicated programs, this is where SuperSpeed Golf comes in. Shay and Napoleon believe that athletes can be, "held back by trying to control too many aspects of the game and not just letting themselves be naturally athletic." With SuperSpeed programs, players can come in with a crowded mind of various techniques, tools, advice, and analytical information they have accumulated throughout their years of playing, and essentially reach a space that allows them to play with a sense of freedom. An interesting concept of SuperSpeed golf is the uniqueness of their overall theory of increasing the speed of a swing with lighter clubs. Shay and Napoleon put this concept into perspective by using an example. A typical player may swing at 100 mph with a driver, SuperSpeed Golf takes that measurement, and after the first session of their program increases that player's speed by an average of 5%. The player then uses different clubs provided by SuperSpeed golf such as their 20% Light club (20% lighter than a driver) which could increase their speed up to 118-120 mph. Clubs range from the 20% Light to the 5% Heavy (5% heavier than a driver). Using the science of "neuro-muscular responsiveness" SuperSpeed golf can train the brain to govern the muscular system into moving faster than it had originally thought it could. The interesting part? This is counter to what many athletes and coaches have been taught. Through past years, it has been a norm for athletes to train heavy to increase speed. For example, a batter may take practice swings with a heavy bat before stepping up to the plate to take a game-like swing to increase speed. SuperSpeed Golf has gone against the grain with their vision. Their mental goal? SuperSpeed wants their athletes focusing on "not trying to consciously control things when they're on the golf course and trying to become more reactionary." Dr. Bhrett McCabe adds in "Our training, our coaching, our development are all investment into our underlying ability, so by raising our ability to swing at a higher level, I don't need to put conscious energy onto it under competition. I can believe the investment is going to be paid out over time." SuperSpeed Golf is also thinking into the future of opening a SuperSpeed Slugger program for bat-swinging athletes. We enjoyed talking with both Kyle Shay and Michael Napoleon about how they have created new possibilities of training with golfers. Check them out today! https://superspeedgolf.com
