Official Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) Podcast

Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday the House of Commons sits. It gives MPs the chance to put questions to the Prime Minister or a nominated minister. In most cases, the session starts with a routine 'open question' from an MP about the Prime Minister's engagements. MPs can then ask supplementary questions on any subject, often one of current political significance. The Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, asks six questions and the leader of the second largest opposition party asks two. The Autumn Statement is an update on the Government's taxation and spending plans for the economy. The statement usually takes place in October or November, and is delivered by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Commons. After the Statement is delivered, the Shadow Chancellor will respond, followed by a representative for the Scottish National Party. The Chair of the Treasury Committee is often called to respond at this point too. MPs will then debate the Autumn Statement for three days.

Today was the State Opening of Parliament, which took place in the House of Lords Chamber, marking the formal start to Parliament's next session.
