Terri Trespicio: How to Stand Out in a Sea of Sameness

"If you really want to stand out, say something no one else has, in a way that only you can." - Terri Trespicio If you are an entrepreneur, health or life coach, a business owner, work in a professional services company, or any industry where you need to be able to stand out from your competition, then you'll want to tune in today as Terri Trespicio is going to teach us how to stand out from the crowd! Terri is an award-winning writer, a stand-up comic, and a TEDx talker with more than 4 million views. A former magazine editor and radio host at Martha Stewart, she has appeared on the Today show, Dr. Oz, The Early Show, The Martha Stewart Show and The Anderson Cooper Show. Her work has been featured Oprah magazine, Marie Claire, Jezebel,Prevention, Business Insider, Forbes.com, and Inc.com. The show notes are at thegoodlifecoach.com/030 Key Takeaways: IT ALL STARTS WITH THE MESSAGE.  Why are you doing what you do?  The answer can’t be because you like it. The fact is that there are thousands of people that do what you do.  The key is to identify not just what makes you different but to create copy that resonates with your audience.  People try to make nice sounding copy that makes them sound smart - BUT the audience only cares how it helps them. People use the words everyone else uses.  You need to use the words that are unique to your customers. Your website shouldn’t be a mirror in which you see yourself it should be a mirror of people seeing themselves.  When you ask: What do I do?, What do I offer?, What are my services? - these aren’t your brand.  This is your job. Questions to ask yourself: Write a scene from your life and your work because it felt so good to help the person.  Make it as descriptive as possible.  Take yourself out of the "marketing mind."  Forget “what you do for a minute”  Read it out loud to someone who loves you.  Just mirror back what they heard about it.   What you think what you offer is something different than what you offer - this is the promise of what you do. Write down ways you can serve: “What if I could?”  or “What if we could?”  What if I could help someone look in the mirror and love what they see.  These are the ways you want to serve. The idea funnel.  Write down what the assumptions are that your clients/customers have about your business/service/product.  Then look at the risks of them not using you.  Go deep Conflict.  Where is the rub?  This is what I’m struggling with. Discovery - what do I do about what you just brought up? Application - how do I say it in plain english? Your Bio should be 3rd person and also simple straight forward about what you do. Then, first person description of your story.  Go on LinkedIn - shouldn’t be a cold bio.  Do Linkedin in first person.  - Say for the last twenty years i did this and this is wha I enjoyed about it. TedX - in Kansas City - a NYTimes journalist dropped out and a person on FB reached out and said they had an opening and the person put her in touch with the organizer.   Ted is pure content.  She talked about how follow your passion is not a good fit for anyone. How to craft a talk: — Ask yourself: What do you believe about the world that you can challenge their thinking for their own good and how can you shift my thinking on this topic so I feel better about myself.  It’s not just a good story - it is story-telling+crafting a good idea. Books: Chris Anderson - Ted Talk The Official Ted Guide to Public Speaking Seth Godin - “This is Marketing”  Austin Kleon “Steal Like an Artist” and “The Creative Habit” by Twila Tharp Elizabeth Gilbert - Big Magic Terri's 4 Best Tips for Standing Out: Go deep into what you are doing.  Write to discover and to please. Write to discover and to pleChoose your platforms carefully - start doing videos - people hire you because of the evidence of what you are like.  Linkedin for video and content. Don’t hoard your genius - don’t be afraid of to share your thoughts because you are afraid people will steal your stuff. Call out who don’t want to work with. Dr. Sandra Freiwald - Finding Strength: When the Surgeon Becomes the Patient

Have you or someone you know been diagnosed with breast cancer or another life changing illness? Today, Dr. Sandra Freiwald is here to talk about her journey with breast cancer as not only a surgeon and patient, but as a mother, and a wife. Her husband had his own battle with a rare cancer a few years prior to her diagnosis.  So Sandy has seen the impact of cancer from different perspectives.  She shares her journey and her views on what makes a good life. This is a story of vulnerability and strength - a story that we can all relate to. The show notes are at thegoodlifecoach.com/029   Key Takeaways:   It’s important to recognize that you have to give up some control.  There are things you won’t have the ability to change.  You have to let go and advocate for yourself.  Let people help you and accept the help that people give you.  Recognize that you may feel awful at one particular moment and the next day you may not feel the same way - you might feel better. Learn to go accept and go with the flow.   Sandy's 3 Best Tips:   Schedule your annual mammograms, colonoscopies as early screenings are key if you are diagnosed for the best chance for an optimal outcome. Live every day in the present and savor every moment while we are healthy and are able to do what we love to do. Volunteerism is important.  Fight for other people.    Resources Mentioned   Michele's Free List of 52 Self-Care Tips   Thank you so much for listening!   Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow us Instagram!   I'd love to here from you, if you have questions or comments, visit me here.   If you'd like to advertise or sponsor the show, reach out here.   This episode was sponsored by Design a Life You Love, A Woman's Guide to Living a Happier and More Fulfilled Life which is on sale until the end of June 2019. Suzanne Kingsbury: How to Unlock Your Creativity and Find Your Power

If you have dreams you want to realize, but your limiting beliefs or a critical voice is holding you back, then you'll want to tune in. My guest today is Suzanne Kingsbury the Founder of The Gateless Methodology --which is a combination of brain science, radical nurturing, and embracing your weaknesses. Suzanne takes us through the three steps to implement her methodology. Her work is moving away from a culture of criticism to reconnect to your creativity, power, and your truth. Suzanne is a best-selling author. The agent who sold Memoirs of a Geisha and Cold Mountain sold her book to Scribner for one of the biggest deals of the year for a first novelist, foreign rights were coming, and film options were on the way.  Her writing dreams had suddenly come alive. And in the years ahead, she realized her bigger calling was to help new writers experience the sweetness of publishing success. You don’t need to be a writer to learn how to tap into your power and creativity. This work is for anyone as it teaches you how to improve your relationships with yourself, your partner and even become a more present parent.  All of the show notes can be found at thegoodlifecoach.com/028.   Who is the Gateless methodology for?  Everyone. The work translates to all areas of people’s lives. The Gateless Process: Radical nurturing.  The ability to allow yourself to be nurtured.  Hot baths, massage, and writing a list of what is beautiful about you every night.  When you do this your inner voice will appear.  Pay attention and don’t let it take over.  This is what makes you strong. Look at what you see as broken about you is actually your power.  Don’t fight what we see as broken and see it as our superpower.  This is very counter-culture which is why it is so profound. Understand that you have so many resources innately inside of you that we often forget to count.  For example, people think money is the most important thing but she says resources are the most important thing.  What do you need?  This is what gives you agency to begin. Look for your resources: Time, People, Networking Events She looks at the part of the mind that triggers fight or flight.  When you look at what is happening that makes you feel joyful - do more than that.  What are the activities that are activating the fight or flight.   Gateless is around finding what works and surrounding yourself with more good. What does my husband do well - tell him. What does my child do well?  How can I first tell my kid what I love about her.  When the critical voice gets strong it means you are on the right path. If there is a block - write into the block.  Let the voice of anxiety speak on the paper.  Write in the 2nd person.  It wants to be heard.  Then ask it - do you think this is actually true?  Listen - do you think there are really these issues?  Should we look? Let’s see if that is true and then the anxiety can be seen and heard.   Buy a journal - write your story.  Look for the divine in there.  There is something that is greater than the human condition.  Ask the questions and the highest self will answer the questions. If you want to be a writer.  Brenda Ueland - If you want to ?” Run with the Wolves - author of that book. Channeled writing - and then let whatever wants to come out on the page.  talk about your life and direction.  Self-assessment.  Am I embodying everything I want to put out in the world in a real way? Suzanne's 3 Best Tips: Be the best friend of the self - Parent the self.  Really find the abundance of the strength of who you are. Don’t beat yourself up over time.  As long as you have the intention.  Relax around the time - it will happen at the right time. Really see if there is an availability for writing in your life.  A tiny notepad that you can write about what you love about you, your husband, and let your critic speak. Everything is possible with the approach of non-judgment.  You are exactly where you are supposed to be right now.  Find your strength. Michele Lamoureux: The May Risk-Taker Challenge

On today’s show I am talking about risk-taking. You may not think you are a risk-taker but a risk doesn’t have to be something major – my definition is to stretch yourself beyond your comfort zone so you can grow in your life in a positive way. In just 10 minutes you’ll be inspired to join the May risk-taker challenge and do just ONE THING that you have been wanting to do! Show notes at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/027. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Spring Challenge – Risk Takers Wanted! Do you ever notice how different seasons infuse you with different energy? Spring is generally a season where we feel more motivated to make a change and “spring clean” to get rid of the things that no longer serve us.   Since the podcast is all about living a more fulfilled life I wanted to give you a challenge for May while you are in an energized frame of mind.Ask yourself “What’s what one thing that I’ve wanted to try, start, learn, or explore further?”  Whatever comes to mind – write it down. I’d like to challenge you to take action this month on thisONE thing.Really think about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. If you’ve wanted to start a business, take the first step to research the concept.  If you’ve wanted to sign up for guitar, voice, acting lessons – sign up today.  That improv class that you’ve been talking about – get yourself registered. That book you’ve wanted to write – put pen to paper.  That course you’ve wanted to take that could launch a new career – go for it!  We can spend so much time thinking about how we don’t have the time, that we don’t leave room for the possibility of what would happen if we did.   Our minds prefer certainty but without expanding beyond what is comfortable one year to another begins to look very similar and your dreams and desires will continue to take the back seat.  Half this year is over – so let’s make 2019 more meaningful for you! RESOURCES MENTIONED Michele on Instagram – tag me on instagram and let me know what challenge you are working on. Cynthia Besteman: Cancer Warrior + Green Beauty CEO

In this Episode:     Cynthia Besteman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and threw out all of her toxic skincare products when she realized that they weren't the "natural" products they promised to be. In 2015 Violets Are Blue is launched. She used her knowledge and passion for naturally-derived skincare ingredients to formulate a consciously-produced line of products, each one a true labor of love. In addition to developing new products for the Signature and Beloved lines, Cynthia provides patients at the Mt. Sinai Dubin Breast Center in NYC with a gifted package of Beloved products upon their first day of chemotherapy.  She is also proud to have created a company that supports women helping women, with 10% of the purchase price of all products going toward skincare donations for cancer patients. Show notes at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/024. Born in Seattle, Cynthia first landed in New York City determined to find her way as an actress, after completing a major in theater at the University of Oregon. She worked on Broadway for 10yrs before checking out the real estate scene and quickly became one of the top brokers in the city. After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in 2011, Cynthia’s successful career in the cutthroat world of New York City real estate came to a skidding halt. While undergoing treatment, one of her first actions was to toss out all beauty products containing unsafe chemicals and synthetic fragrances, leaving her medicine cabinet bare. She was shocked by the mislabeling of many skincare and beauty products that were classified as "natural" while containing parabens, sulfates, and other chemicals known to work as endocrine disruptors linked to cancer and reproductive concerns. Key Takeaways: Cynthia wanted to bring dignity back to the women being treated for breast cancer.  She created her “Beloved” line which is specifically formulated for women dealing with cancer. Cynthia wants women dealing with breast cancer to be called “warriors” instead of "thrivers and survivors” as she believes that puts too much pressure on people. She helped with the Cancer Wellness Expo in New York City - inviting “ultimate warriors” to come together. Loves speaking about her journey - because you can go through something and come out better.  She launched her company in her 50s.  She says if you know you want to make changes in your life - take action. As long as you have the passion or start the journey to find the passion - it’s exciting. Cynthia's 3 Best Tips: Be authentic to you not to anyone else. It’s never too late to start something new. It makes you feel younger. Find humor in every circumstance. Rebecca Ching: Anxiety in a Culture of "Never Enough"

In this Episode: Today we are covering an important subject - anxiety.  Did you know that according the to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America in the US, 40 million people aged 18 and older - that’s about 18 percent of the population - has an anxiety disorder.  So joining me to lovingly and respectfully discuss this tapic  is Rebecca Ching.  Rebecca is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Lots of great resources mentioned at the end of this episode - everything will be listed at thegoodlifecoach.com/023. Rebecca is Certified in  Internal Family Systems Therapist, a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator+Consultant (CDWF-C) (based on the research of Brené Brown), Certified EMDR Therapist+Consultant-in-Training , and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS) + iaedp™. She will discuss when anxiety can be beneficial and what it looks like when it accumulates and hits a tipping point so you know when to seek out help.  We also discuss it through the lens of what my Rebecca calls a culture of “never enough” which makes us question: “Am I doing enough?  Have I achieved enough?  Am I pretty enough?  Am I good enough?  The root being feeling of “Am I enough?”   Perfectionism is a way for anxiety to play itself out and creates shame.  Not being worthy and not feeling enough.

Laura Gassner Otting: How to Get Unstuck + Live a Limitless Life

IN THIS EPISODE: Do you feel stuck in your life professionally or personally? Would you like to get “unstuck”? On the show today my guest is Laura Gassner Otting, the author of Limitless:  How to Ignore Everybody, Carve Your Own Path, and Live Your Best Life.  Laura believes that “consonance” is the key to living a limitless life and on the show we discuss what that means, how to use her unique framework to get “unstuck” and live life on your terms, the value of owning your ambition as a woman, and much more!  Laura is a a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold a successful international executive search firm and served as a Presidential Appointee in Bill Clinton’s White House, helping shape AmeriCorps.  In the context of the book, Limitless is the concept of moving away from a “singular” definition of success and to create your own which is something we discuss often on this podcast. Laura and I agree that if you spend time worrying about someone else’s definition of success you lose your way and what’s possible for you. KEY TAKEAWAYS: People get stuck because of faux humility.  The best anecdote to being stuck is movement but we’ve lost our ability to be ambitious. It is important to ask “What do I really want?”  She asks women “Would being in a position of power allow you do to more for the people you love?  Can you say, ‘I can own that big dream.  I can dare to think of myself as the person that belongs in that place.’  Own that for yourself.  Do what do you need to do first. Feel like you deserve it.  Demand that shot.” When you demonstrate more competence you gain more confidence. Laura takes us through the 4 C’s that make up “consonance”. The 4 Cs: Calling – she helped people find work in non-profit for 25 years but for many people their purpose is buying a beach house and having a sports car.  In the book, she says “that’s okay”.  The only person who should get a vote is you.  Whatever drives is you is all that matters. Contribution.  Ask yourself, “What do I want my life to look?  Does this allow me to manifest the life that I want?” Connection – Ask – “if I didn’t get out of bed – would anyone notice? Why do I matter?”  We get busy, but is what you are doing quality time and focused on what matters to you? Control – does my work allow me to have control over the amount of connection and contribution with others. Laura’s 3 Best Tips: “Write your plans in pencil.  There is no part of your life that is directional forever.  If you want to change – change.” “No is a complete sentence.  I’m sorry but I can’t…” is a phrase you should feel comfortable saying.” “Let’s stop leaning in with one definition of success and define it on our own terms and lean in to that.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Laura Gassner Otting – Laura’s website  Laura’s Limitless Quiz On all social @heylgo Michele on Instagram This episode was sponsored by Design a Life You Love, A Woman’s Guide to Living a Happier and More Fulfilled Life.  My book includes 52 inspirations, one for every week of the year, each with practical tips to guide you to self-love and success on your own terms.
