Deborah Calmeyer: Founder of Roar Africa on How Being in the Wild is a Prescription for the Soul

Zimbabwe-born Deborah Calmeyer launched ROAR AFRICA 16 years ago with a vision to curate journeys designed to harness the power of nature and facilitate the discovery of peace and purpose while offering a deep reconnection with self. This is a beautiful conversation exploring why we travel + how our soul desires a reconnection to the wild. We discuss: Why Deborah launched her company Roar Africa over 16 years ago. How the wild reconnects us to the power of the feminine and the essence of our souls. How we are suffering from a “nature deficit disorder” and why humans seek out moments of awe. We discuss the importance of silence to reconnect us to our truth and our humanity. Deborah shares about the annual women’s empowerment retreat she hosts in a different African country each year. Think TedWomen on Safari. This is a fascinating conversation! If you’ve ever been on Safari or dreamt of going, love to travel, or are committed to deepening your connection with self, this interview is for you.  While on the show notes page, I’d love for you to join our newsletter. The past two years have drawn more and more people to wild places as a means to recenter and restore themselves and Africa provides some of the last wild landscapes on our increasingly fragmented planet. Calmeyer understands the transformative power of the African bush and how when we turn down the “noise” and remove the demands of travel, we can experience something not attained elsewhere. Calmeyer grew up on a farm in the Zimbabwean bush; her pioneering family have a 330+ year-history in southern Africa. Hers was a childhood deeply infused with indigenous culture, and also with wildlife; swimming with Hyenas in the pool, water skiing on a crocodile-infested lake; her family’s beloved pet lioness (Carmel) that thought she was a Labrador. As a result, Calmeyer is able to translate these magical, deeply spiritual journeys for others, allowing travelers to experience the world’s truly untouched, remote places first-hand while impressing upon them that this is not only an experience to be consumed but also an essential healing for them, for humankind, and for the relationship between the wild and ourselves.

Manisha Thakor: Author of MoneyZen Discusses How Financial Health + Emotional Wealth = Happiness

“Do you recall that famous study which stated that once a person hits an annual income of $75,000, any earnings above that have no bearing on life satisfaction? Well it turns out that number is wrong — but likely not for the reason you think. A brand new study has found that, yes, making more money can lead to greater life satisfaction. But here’s the kicker: It only works if you already possess emotional well-being. Put another way, increased “financial wealth” doesn’t lead to increased happiness if you don’t already have a solid foundation of “emotional wealth.” So how do we solve this money-happiness paradox and learn to build that essential base layer of “emotional wealth”? Enter: Harvard MBA and financial wellbeing guru, Manisha Thakor. In her forthcoming book, MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your “Enough”, Manisha shares her candid journey out of the Cult of Never Enough—a painful mindset that tells you the money you earn, accomplishments you achieve, and praise you receive is never enough. Being trapped on the hamster wheel of Hustle Culture for virtually her entire adult life nearly destroyed Manisha’s relationships, health, and sense of self-worth. So she set out to understand why so many of us develop toxic relationships around work, money, and success at the expense of our emotional well-being and, crucially, how to flip this mental script. Manisha wrote MoneyZen to share the powerful blueprint she developed on that journey—one that can be used by anyone irrespective of age, income, or profession—to stop surviving as a human doing and start thriving as a human being. Woven throughout the book are inspiring stories of individuals from all walks of life, sharing their own unique experiences escaping the Cult of Never Enough. Interviews with a wide range of experts, from wealth psychologists and workaholism researchers, to career coaches, economists, and even evolutionary biologists, provide readers with insights on the role that personal, cultural, societal, and physiological factors play in a Never Enough mindset.” While on the show notes page, I’d love for you to join our newsletter. You’ll receive more inspiration and tips to love yourself and live your best midlife. You’ll also get a FREE copy of Michele’s Book, Design a Life You Love (available for a limited time).   WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: Why your net worth doesn’t = your self worth. How Manisha got caught up in the culture of never enough and how she managed to finally get out. How her little “T” traumas from childhood set the stage for not feeling good enough and created a desire to be financially free. Why she ended in the hospital twice and how almost dying was still not the wake-up call she needed to change. The moment that she realized she had achieved what she wanted and decided she wanted to living on her terms with more joy and simplicity. The advice she has for us on how to get off of the hamster wheel and take back control. How she’s managed her depression and why it’s important not to judge someone’s insides by how put together their life may look on the outside. Her definition of a good life and much more.   RESOURCES MENTIONED Join Michele’s Newsletter Michele on Instagram Michele’s Book Manisha’s Website: https://moneyzen.com/ http://moneyzenbook.com/ Manisha’s Book: MoneyZen https://www.instagram.com/manishathakor/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/manishathakor/ https://www.youtube.com/user/ManishaThakor   ABOUT THE GUEST Manisha Thakor has worked in financial services for over thirty years, with an emphasis on women’s economic empowerment and financial wellbeing. Advice I'd Give My 20-Something Self

This is a follow-up episode to an episode I recorded a few years ago based on a blog post I had written. This is the original post. Thank you for being here!   I wrote an article a few months ago with a top-ten list of advice I’d give to my twenty-something self based on what I know now. I turned it into an 8 minute podcast episode for women of all ages! So, I’d love to know — what advice would you give your 20-something self? This is a great episode to share with your daughter going off to college or a twenty-something woman in your life…really for any woman as I think my 85 year old self would be giving me this same advice! ;-   Hi Lovely, How is life treating you? I’ve been thinking of you and thought I’d send a note to remind you of a few key things to make your life’s journey a little smoother.   HERE’S MY TOP TEN LIST: Love yourself. This is the key to everything good in your life. It may sound over simplistic but the actual practice of self-love is a lifetime practice. You came from love and are an expression of love. So remember to be loving to yourself every day — no matter what. Promise? When those “inner voices” come in with doubt to tell you that you aren’t enough, tell them firmly they are mistaken. You ARE worthy of a magnificent, healthy, and abundant life! When you know that to be true, you only allow what’s in your highest good to come into your life. That’s what we all deserve. Make pleasure a priority. Pursue the things that light YOU up! Don’t put your passions and interests to the side. They are your roadmap to happiness. You deserve to be happy, and only you know how to make that happen…so make it happen. Don’t get distracted by other people’s agendas or how they want you to spend your time. Stand firmly in who you are like a wise old tree with its deep roots. The world will always have an opinion about what you should be and how you should see yourself, so remember this is your one shot at life and you don’t have time to waste people pleasing and playing small. Don’t settle for a partner who doesn’t honor you. When you are in a relationship, it isn’t a daily roller coaster ride. You don’t have to question whether the one you love is committed to the relationship, because you just know. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work on your relationship (all great love requires communication and commitment). It does mean that if your partner isn’t treating you with the respect you deserve, then it’s time to move on. Great love does exist! This goes for friendships too. Let go of the toxic people in your life and surround yourself with a tribe of people who love you as you are. Life has its seasons. Sometimes we are in a season where everything flows, and other times it is as if the universe wants to see how much you can handle. Ride the waves with grace knowing there will always be a peaceful shore ready to greet you in time — so keep the faith! Find joy in the little things. Look for the humor in life and laugh every day just like when you were a little girl. Let your inner child illuminate your path.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help. At times we need a helping hand, and it takes strength to admit when we don’t have the answers and need guidance or a shoulder to lean on.  Remember that you are here for a special reason. You have unique gifts that you are meant to share. You are living your “purpose”when you use those special talents in a way that brings you joy. There are no rules about how to express your gifts. Think about being in service and how you can help and doors will open. Pursue what’s whispering in your heart. You want to look back on your life and think, “YESSSS, I lived an awesome life!” Don’t wait for permission to go for your dreams and desires. Most people don’t understand the vision you have for your life, so you have to trust in yourself and your inner knowing and take that first step. Dream big and often! It feels like you have all of the time in the world, but you don’t. Make your dreams a priority and take inspired action every day. You’ll thank me for this one later. 😉 Appreciate your beauty. Be grateful for your youth, your skin, your body, and your mind. Treat your body with respect – and nourish it. When you look back you’ll realize just how beautiful you were, so don’t wait twenty years to recognize the goddess that you are today.   Enjoy each day, stay present, and be grateful for this gift of life and the gift of you.   Xoxo, Your 40-Something Self  Michele on Instagram Get your FREEBIE on Michele’s Website Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast player — and be sure to connect with Michele on Instagram!
