Whether we worry about the future or the past, we don’t take care of what’s happening right now. The solution? When it comes to following the Lord, we can be tempted to let ourselves off easy sometimes. We don’t want to put in the work, and we get lazy. In the Old Testament, this even happened to King David. There’s a story where a father tells his son that there are two wolves fighting inside him, one fighting for good and one for evil. The son asks “which one will win?” The answer is “whichever one you feed.” I think we are usually torn between doing our own will and doing the Lord’s, and trying to decide whether we will work for our own glory or God’s. Fortunately, the Scriptures have some things to say about that. Victor and I talked about a great example from the Old Testament: King David and King Saul. When we decide to follow God, it’s super important that we begin to foster a disgust of sin. But sometimes it’s easier to be disgusted at others’ sins rather than our own, and that causes us to not take our own sins seriously. That’s why Victor and I sat down to talk about getting real in our fight against sin, and not giving ourselves a pass when we fall to temptation. One of the things we, as guys, hate to talk about is past wounds. But we all carry pain from our past, and if we don’t deal with it we’re going to hurt other people.
