1689 8:5 - The Nature of the Atonement | Confessing the Faith
The first word the Confession uses to describe the nature of the atonement is “obedience.” Obedience is really the comprehensive category under which the atonement must be understood. If this surprises you, you should remember how often the Scripture itself speaks of the work of Christ as atonement.

1689 8:4 - The Necessity of the Atonement | Confessing the Faith
When we speak of the necessity of the atonement, this raises a more basic issue. Is anything necessary for God? If God is almighty and wanted to save, could He not simply save men without an atonement?

Kiffen and Schism or Marvelously Silly Members | Particular Pilgrims
One of the most frequent charges made against those of the baptized way in their early years, was that their churches were formed without Scriptural warrant. Their existence as independent congregations was considered a great sin by their opponents since it publicly tore apart Christ’s one church. Separatists were charged with schism, that is, causing a breach in the unity of the visible church. And while in our day, this would seem a small thing, given that every man worships God according to what is right in his own eyes, in that day it was a most serious charge. As one of the early pastors of a baptized congregation, William Kiffen regularly faced this accusation.
You are listening to Particular Pilgrims: Stories from Reformed Baptist History told by Ron Miller, Pastor of Covenant Baptist Church of Clarksville, TN and a longtime student and collector of Particular Baptist History. Pastor Miller also serves on the Board of Directors of Covenant Baptist Theological Seminary.
