Imara chats with award-winning activist, author, and media strategist Raquel Willis about her new memoir The Risk It Takes to Bloom: On Life and Liberation. Dr. Susan Stryker, a historian, joins Imara Jones to discuss trans activism, overlooked moments in trans history, and the lessons we can learn from survivors of oppression. Cultural theorist Dr. C. Riley Snorton explores the racialized history of transness, including the exploitation of enslaved people for gender research. They also discuss the impact of black trans individuals in creative fields and the intersection of race and gender.

To celebrate the beginning of LGBT History Month, Imara is joined by legendary trans activist and Stonewall veteran Miss Major. Like transness, fatness is politicized and stigmatized in nearly every part of our culture. So how do fat trans people navigate the challenges and joys at the intersection of these identities? To get more insight, Imara first chats with theorist and storyteller Da’Shaun L. Harrison about the history and politics of anti-Fatness, anti-Blackness, and transphobia. They discuss the colonial roots of fatphobia, the policing of children’s bodies, and how fatness became defined in relationship to thinness. Imara Jones speaks with Asanni Armon about For the Gworls, a party-based organization disrupting fundraising for Black trans people. Tuck Woodstock joins to discuss the Gender Reveal mutual aid and grant program and the impact of trust and frustration in this work. They emphasize the importance of financial access and affirmative care for trans individuals and highlight the role of mutual aid in supporting the trans community during protests and the Covid-19 pandemic.
