Being Fat and Trans

Like transness, fatness is politicized and stigmatized in nearly every part of our culture. So how do fat trans people navigate the challenges and joys at the intersection of these identities? To get more insight, Imara first chats with theorist and storyteller Da’Shaun L. Harrison about the history and politics of anti-Fatness, anti-Blackness, and transphobia. They discuss the colonial roots of fatphobia, the policing of children’s bodies, and how fatness became defined in relationship to thinness. Next, Imara is joined by artist and model Miss Mojo, who shares her experience of desirability as a fat Black woman, and the discrimination she’s faced in the hip hop world. Follow TransLash Media @translashmedia on Instagram, Threads,  X, and Facebook.Follow Imara Jones on X (@ImaraJones) and Instagram (@Imara_jones_)Follow our guests on social media!Jordan Underwood: X (@JordAllenHall) and Instagram (@jordallenhall)Da’Shaun L. TransLash Presents: Capturing The New York Times

Disinformers ultimately want their narratives to filter into trusted sources where they can almost imperceptibly begin to shift public opinion. In this episode, Imara dives into how Christian Nationalists have successfully made The New York Times—arguably the world’s most powerful news organization—into an agent of their views. The fact that they have done so is a degree of success beyond what they could have hoped. And the way that anti-trans ideas have embedded themselves at the paper has wide ranging impacts on trans people as well American democracy overall. Join us as we learned how this happened through the voices and stories of former and current New York Times staff.Subscribe to the Anti-Trans Hate Machine: https://translash.org/antitranshatemachine/ Hosted on Acast. TransLash Presents: A Voice for Anti-Trans, Mass Media

Various parts of the right wing disinformation machine effectively work in tandem to elevate junk science and platform people spreading anti-trans hate. In this episode, Imara takes a deep dive into the inner workings of this world by following the rise of Abigail Shrier, a woman who rose quickly from obscurity to become a so-called expert spreading the myth of social contagion. We'll explore how she packaged these concepts in ways that was ready made for Christian Nationalist media, especially Fox News. And how they were accompanied by a mainstream appeal that’s had a devastating impact on parents and kids.Subscribe to the Anti-Trans Hate Machine: https://translash.org/antitranshatemachine/ Hosted on Acast. What's Going On in Texas?

Texas legislators introduced over 50 anti-trans bills during the 2023 session and will soon become the largest state to ban gender affirming care. Imara takes a look at what’s going on in the state and how advocates are fighting back. First, she speaks with organizer and educator Adri Pérez about their experience being arrested and sustaining a concussion at the Texas Capitol. Next, she’s joined by advocate and mother to a trans child, Rachel Gonzalez. Rachel shares her perspective on conservative Texas politics, what she’s doing to keep her daughter safe, and how chosen family sustains her activism. You can learn more about how this type of legislation is spreading across the country by listening to the Anti-Trans Hate Machine here.Follow TransLash Media @translashmedia on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.Follow Imara Jones on Twitter (@ImaraJones) and Instagram (@Imara_jones_)Adri Pérez: Twitter (@adripereztx) and Instagram (@adripereztx)Rachel Gonzalez: Twitter (@rgonzalestx) and Instagram (@rachelgonzalestx5)Organización Trans Latina in Texas: https://www.latinatranstexas.org/TransLash Podcast is produced by Translash Media.Translash Team: Imara Jones, Oliver-Ash Kleine, Aubrey Calaway. Xander Adams is our sound engineer and contributing producer.Digital strategy by Daniela Capistrano.Theme Music: Ben Draghi and ZZK records.  Hosted on Acast.
