IE164 Jon-Olaf Hendricks: Transforming Addiction into Empowerment: Option C Recovery Method for Growth & Transformation
In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Jon-Olaf Hendricks, a sober lifestyle strategist, international best-selling author, speaker, and mentor. Jon-Olaf is the Co-Founder and CEO of Option C Recovery, a new option and global recovery community where everyone impacted by addiction is encouraged and empowered toheal together.Amrit and Jon-Olaf have a deep, raw and open conversation about a new outlook on the entire addiction recovery paradigm which stems from Jon-Olaf’s personal journey. Stepping out of current limited recovery systems and programs and forging his way into a new path to create his own successful recovery process. A chapter about a simple yet a powerful way to recover from addiction, keep sober, and move into a space of personal growth, love and success. They talk about why Jon-Olaf started drinking and his path towards recovery. As a child, Jon-Olaf lacked positive attention, reactions and responses from people of his own surroundings. He grew up with a great capacity and awareness to ask questions, but there was no one there to support him. In fact, everyone tried to shut him down, leading him into misery and isolation. As soon as he found out that he could run away from all of that, drugs and alcohol became his best friend. When he hit rock bottom he made the conscious decision he was done with so much pain and started different rehab programs finding them all limited. Jon-Olaf put a step aside and decided to recover on his own. He believes connecting, sharing, supporting, and healing together, helps people navigate back towards sobriety, personal growth, and indeed towards the growth of humanity. They cave into his Option C Recovery program. A conversation around an option based on his new philosophies which revolutionize the way the world approaches addiction recovery and mental health. Furthermore, they dive deep into how one becomes an addict, as well as the knock-on effects of drinking, how it affects the connection with ourselves and others, and how it can have a completely negative effect in relationships, in other words how drinking can make you miss out on everything in your life.In this chapter you will have access to a mobile app that helps addicts recover, recovering addicts stay sober, and the friends and family of those affected to better understand how they can support their loved ones and each other. You will also have access to courses that will help you move forward and find a balance in between your physical, intelectual, emotional and spiritual foundational pillars. IE162 Dr. Bessel van der Kolk: Transforming Trauma: How to Heal the Body that Keeps The Score
In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a psychiatrist, author, researcher and educator based in Boston, USA. He was previously the president for the International Society for Traumatic stress Studies, former co-director of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine and president of the Trauma Research Foundation in Brookline, Massachusetts.Dr. Bessel has published over 150 peer reviewed scientific articles on trauma and how to heal from trauma. He is the author of “Post-traumatic Stress Disorder”, “Psychological Trauma”, Traumatic Stress with Alexander C. McFarlane and Lars Weisæth, and the New York Times best seller, The Body Keeps the Score. In this episode, Amrit and Dr. Bessel have a profound conversation about trauma and healing. They dive deep into what causes trauma, how and why it gets stored in the body, and effective healing modalities to recover from it.If you would like to have access to Dr. Bessel’s best seller “The Body Keeps the Score” and learn more about how to heal a body that stores trauma, please go to: https://amz.run/4I8M In the first part of this chapter, Amrit and Dr. Bessel talk about what is trauma, what goes on in our brain when we hold on to things that we can't let go of, how we navigate the world with stored traumatic experiences, experiences that can prevent you from living a life and the importance of having people around you when feeling overwhelmed. They converse about the changes in your brain when you go through a dramatic experience, different parts of the body related to traumatic experiences, the role of helplessness when trying to get out of a traumatic experience we can’t get out of and the role of our nervous system when processing trauma. They cave into a dialogue around the link between our rational mind and the trauma we experience and where the trauma is stored. In regards to this modern society in which people have in their heads what their bodies should look like; they talk about whether this is potentially creating more of a disconnection rather than a connection to their bodies.Furthermore, in the second half of the episode, they dive deep into healing with a short parable of the raft and how once helpful things can become a burden instead. They talk about how to begin with healing, how every culture has their own indigenous ways of dealing with trauma, the importance of some modalities of healing having someone around, modalities for healing with no one around, different healing therapies, western culture’s therapies, and promising neurofeedback and psychedelic therapy with it’s different perspectives. In this chapter you will discover what trauma is, how it makes you feel, how it is formed and created, how it changes your brain, why people experiencing trauma keep behaving and reacting as if they were stuck in that experience, why you get stuck in a state of hyper alertness and why your body, mind and entire system gets frozen or stuck in “fight or flight” mode. You will understand why people try to shut the feeling down and end up shutting down their ability to feel turning to drugs, alcohol, pharmaceuticals and compulsive behaviour. You also will have access to different modalities and therapies for healing trauma, promising research around psychotropics and psychedelic therapy and neurofeedback. You will learn the importance of taking care of your body, feeling safe and being surrounded by your loved ones. You will master the most effective healing modalities to recover from trauma!“Take care of your body”“Develop a loving relationship to take care of your body”About Dr. Bessel van der Kolk:Bessel van der Kolk MD spends his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences, and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults. In 1984, he set up one of the first clinical/research centers in the US dedicated to study and treatment of traumatic stress in civilian populations, which has trained numerous researchers and clinicians specializing in the study and treatment of traumatic stress, and which has been continually funded to research the impact of traumatic stress and effective treatment interventions. He did the first studies on the effects of SSRIs on PTSD; was a member of the first neuroimaging team to investigate how trauma changes brain processes, and did the first research linking BPD and deliberate self-injury to trauma and neglect in early childhood.Much of his research has focused on how trauma has a different impact at different stages of development, and that disruptions in care-giving systems have additional deleterious effects that need to be addressed for effective intervention. In order to promote a deeper understanding of the impact of childhood trauma and to foster the development and execution of effective treatment interventions, he initiated the process that led to the establishment of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN), a Congressionally mandated initiative that now funds approximately 150 centers specializing in developing effective treatment interventions, and implementing them in a wide array of settings, from juvenile detention centers to tribal agencies, nationwide. He has focused on studying treatments that stabilize physiology, increase executive functioning and help traumatized individuals to feel fully alert to the present. This has included an NIMH funded study on EMDR and NCCAM funded study of yoga, and, in recent years, the study of neurofeedback to investigate whether attentional and perceptual systems (and the neural tracks responsible for them) can be altered by changing EEG patterns. His efforts resulted in the establishment of Trauma Center (now the Trauma Research Foundation) that consisted of a well-trained clinical team specializing in the treatment of children and adults with histories of child maltreatment, that applied treatment models that are widely taught and implemented nationwide, a research lab that studied the effects of neurofeedback and MDMA on behavior, mood, and executive functioning, and numerous trainings nationwide to a variety of mental health professional, educators, parent groups, policy makers, and law enforcement personnel.Tune In: Welcome Dr. Bessel van der Kolk to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00)How Dr. Bessel defines Trauma: (02:59)“Trauma is an experience that overwhelms your system”Process in the brain when holding onto things and not letting go: (04:10) “We have systems in the brain that create the map of where we need to go”Navigating the world with traumatic experiences that drop in: (07:44)“What originally was protecting you becomes a deferment and prevents you from living”Traumatic experiences have to be extreme or can they be everyday experiences?: (08:41) “Humans need each other to make themselves feel safe”Community as an instrumental part of the coping system: (11:27)“The deepest hurt is to be brutalized by the people we love”About the brain having gone through a traumatic experience: (12:27)“If you cannot fight or flee, your system may get stuck and keep on producing stress hormones”Different parts of the body related to different traumatic experiences?: (13:55)The role of helplessness when trying to get out of traumatic experiences you can't get out of: (15:24)The role of the nervous system in processing trauma: (16:32)“The function of the brain is to have a functioning body”“Your body sends signals that need to be attended”The link between a rational mind and a traumatic experience. A rich conversation about the power that play has to connect and have a harmonious relationship, to find a moment of hope and heal past trauma, and to live in this world as our own true self. They talk about Dafna’s journey into the profundity of play and her beautiful definition of play. They converse about what happens to a baby when their caregiver is not responsive or is abusive and how parents can approach a child that is damaged or has been rejected. Furthermore they cave into a dialogue around parents expectations and how they can handle them, how just one moment of play and connection can heal an extended period of disconnection, qualities of a parent that can help a disconnected child, what is the symptomatic of a healthy functioning relationship, the importance of repair and reconnecting, and how to deal with discipline. In this chapter of Inspired Evolution you will discover why we tend to play less as we get older, what attachment means to Dafna, which is the most formative period of a child, whether to embody or not the values of pace in babies, and advice to those who are parents for the first time. You will learn to play with your child in a way that establishes felt safety, increases social engagement, expands arousal regulation, and supports the development of positive self-esteem for both your child and yourself. You also will have access to different fun and caring parent/child games and activities that build attunement and understanding of each other, replicating early relationship experiences that are proven to lead to secure attachment. You will find ways to help your child discover his/her true self and ways to approach, connect and start healing your child's past trauma. She trains psychotherapists all over the world and trains in three languages English, French and Hebrew.Early in her career, Dafna worked in treatment foster care and witnessed child after child “fail” out of foster placements due to difficult behavior. Children were disruptive, unsettled and unhappy, and their caregivers felt defeated. Dafna’s sense of discouragement went away after taking the DDP training and learning direct, concrete ideas and interactions that she could apply in home with her treatment families to promote healthier, stable relationships. Dafna’s area of expertise is helping children with serious psychological problems caused by histories of abuse, neglect, trauma and/or multiple placements. By focusing on developing a child’s secure attachment with his/her caregivers, Dafna helps resolve issues in the child’s traumatic history. She has successfully treated children with a variety of backgrounds, including children raised in orphanages, with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, exposed to domestic violence and community violence and children of parents with chronic mental illness. Her aim is to help people believe that there is hope in their relationship and that they can experience happiness and connections that they thought weren’t possible. Tune In: Welcome Dafna Lender to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00:00)Dafna’s journey into the profundity of play:(01:57)Her journey started as a social worker putting kids from 6 to 12 in pre adoptive homes, matching the family with the child, and then accompanying them on this journey hoping they would be able to live happily ever after. Nobody was prepared for the events that would happen at home when the child actually showed fear of the enemency of the parent-child relationship. Dive in and see what Dafna did to help these damaged kids and the child/parent relationship.“I went on a search to find the skills to help damaged kids”About the disruption of children’s intimacy: (04:18)When a child is born their attachment system is prime and ready to connect with a responsive primary caregiver. If that primary caregiver is not responsive or abusive, then this child is going to grow up completely distrusting and it will be very hard to be their own selves.“Damaged kids see any adult that wants to take care of them as a menace ”Approaches that work with damaged kids: (06:40)Discover the importance of acceptance, being present, and sharing basic experiences. As corporate burnout sunk in, Linda took proper (and longer) breaks between gigs, and discovered life (and love) in Alaska. Fairbanks has been her home since 2008. In the process of healing, she discovered meditation and yoga. Her own explorations into “the meaning of life” led her to the practice of Vipassana meditation in 2008 and to communal ashram life in 2009. Linda was quickly invited to share the gifts of meditation, mindfulness, and yoga into the community of Fairbanks, particularly to those recovering from addiction, trauma and mental illness. This led to advanced clinical psychotherapy trainings in trauma and completion of a Master of Social Work (Simmons University, Boston, MA), with an emphasis on the neurobiology of attachment and trauma in May 2018. Linda has also studied Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Brainspotting, Havening, Internal Family Systems, and structural dissociation of the personality and has served the addiction and trauma recovery community of Fairbanks in various roles since 2012 working in both residential and outpatient recovery programs. She has worked with the Women and Children’s Home for Inner Healing, Ralph Perdue Center, Turning Point Counseling Services, Fairbanks Native Association Community Services and Youth and Young Adult Services, the UAF Social Work Department, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District's Education Support Staff Association, Anderson Fire Department, and has led many community-based offerings. In 2013, she co-founded Alaska’s first Yoga and 12 Step Recovery Meeting, and has volunteered as a Big Sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2016. She is currently adjunct faculty in the Social Work Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a freelance educator, specializing in trauma-informed care and compassion fatigue resiliency skills to nurture longevity in the caring professions. She is also a mental health clinician at ND Systems, specializing in somatic therapies and trauma therapy. She assists internationally renowned psychiatrist and trauma expert, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, with his private small group psychotherapy workshops aimed at healing attachment trauma, and keeps abreast of the latest research and interventions in trauma recovery.Linda prefers to share the blessings of her journey in a strongly practical and yet light-hearted manner. In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Simone Dowding who has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and has spent a year studying meditation and Buddhist philosophy with “His Holiness”, the Dalai Lama in the Himalayas. Simone is the founder of Conscious Business Evolution. She is a social enterprise expert, conscious business keynote, conscious capitalist, brand developer and strategist. Simone used to be the Managing Director at Change Coffee, and not long ago Head of this social enterprise at World Vision Australia, the first social enterprise on a mission to eradicate global poverty by 2030 and to use their profits to fund life-changing projects globally focusing on the economic empowerment of women. In this special chapter of Inspired Evolution, Amrit interviews Simone on two different occasions to talk about how Simone thrives to connect, inspire and make a difference in every single moment of her life, and how she loves to support people making conscious choices that positively impact their lives and the world. The first interview is live and takes place at “Get Hacked & Get Hi” in Melbourne, Australia, and the second one is performed virtually some other day in which they dive into the whole conversation a bit further. In the biohacking wellness event they talk about Simone’s three principles that make a difference in the world and solve humanity’s most urgent challenges, her journey finding these key values, what was it like walking back into the actual environment with a conscious leadership model that operates with kindness and compassion, and how these values help her day by day with the decision making process. Furthermore, they talk about all the challenges she had to face bringing awareness of leadership into the world, tools to manage all what she wants to achieve, how to break the pattern of worry and the importance of facing fears. In addition you will enjoy 5 minutes of meditation with Simone to release dark energy and honour a space of white seeds. In the second interview, they dive in a bit further. According to Simone, corporates hold the key to solving humanity’s most urgent challenges. They must employ commercial enterprise to create sustainable initiatives and lead by example by being profitable, accountable, responsible and conscientious. They talk about the inner work Simone does every day to build a bigger mountain of white seeds to create mental wellness, the world as a space of conscious capitalism, new systems to be seen in the business world and the importance of having conscious corporate leadership. In this episode you will learn how to consciously operate with kindness and compassion, master the tools to manage all what you want to achieve, face fears, build resilience, shift to a place of “we” instead of “me” taking self responsibility in actions and mindfully making choices that are in service to all, articulate what you stand for, and consciously evolve your organization in alignment with your principal values.About Simone Dowding:Simone Dowding is the founder of Conscious Business Evolution. She is a social entrepreneur and strategic business consultant who harnesses the power of business to drive social change. She refers to three values that help her shape her reality. Her three principles are connect, inspire and make a difference. Which are yours?“It all comes down to what can we do to change this world”How Simone’s principles help her with the decision making process?: (01:33)“Look for three pilars to guide you and behave in a positive way into the world when things get difficult.Setting up businesses aligned with own values: (03:00) Your principles can weave into any environment. If you believe in yourself and your values, it will weave its way through your whole organization, through your family, and through everything you do.“Create impact by being yourself and what you stand for”Simone’s journey in finding her three key values: (04:51) “Make a difference by operating with kindness and compassion”Walking back into actual environment with a conscious leadership model:(07:20)You must share all that you know that can help change this world. Simone would have loved to stay and live her whole life in the monastery, but instead, she decided to go out and share Buddhism philosophy to the world and try to make a change.“Our responsibility is to bring awareness of conscious leadership into the world”Challenges in bringing awareness of leadership into the world: (09:20)There is a conversation going on about a Buddhism spiritual paradigm that says that every action is contributing to creating our world. They talk about white seeds and black seeds. We all need to plant white seeds, kindness and love, that will be good for us and others. When things are not right we need to plant more.“Every action contributes to create our world”Live meditation with Simone to release dark energy: (12:02)Tools to manage all what Simone wants to achieve: (17:04) “Chose thoughts of love that will keep you stable”Breaking the pattern of worry and building resilience: (20:50)“Track fears that are holding you back to rise up into the space of who you really are” The importance of facing fears: (22:21)“Face your fears and transform them into love thoughts”Brief Q and A & another mantra: (23:18)Tune In Part II: Welcome back to the Inspired Evolution, we are diving in a bit further!: (28:35)Simone’s inner work day-to-day and benefits: (28:59)Building a mountain of white seeds; operating with love, kindness and compassion is work to be done every day and should be weaved into family, community, business and every aspect of our lives. Simone refers to the healing she brings at every moment integrated with whom we truly are“How you behave in every moment is authentic in integrity with your truth” About the world as a space of conscious capitalism: (32:32)Building new systems in the business world: (35:21)The idea is to “capitalize” on capitalism. The structure is here and if it disappears we would be in a complete chaos. So, we need to turn capitalism into a conscious capitalism. After all, a thriving community is a thriving business.“The opportunity is transformation in innovation of the capitalist system”About the world not shifting in time so species can live in harmony with it: (37:36)“Corporates will lead the change because they know that resources aren’t infinite”Conscious awakening alluding to systems that we are going to be living in: (39:01)“The systems that were serving us were leading us into disaster” Tomorrow's conscious corporate leadership according to Simone: (42:53)“We can still be profitable in this system” says the enterprise expert. The whole idea is that corporations should employ commercial enterprise to create sustainable initiatives and lead by example by being profitable, accountable, responsible and conscientious.“There will be a lot of purpose driven leaders with a lense around sustainability, humanity and planet”Principles aligned with what is ahead for us: (45:26)There is a huge sense of positivism. Simone is convinced we are shifting more to a place of “we” instead of “me” connected more with others and earth. “Be self responsible in your actions and make choices that are in service to all”Making decisions on ethical choices while others are not: (47:23)“Show others that there is something that may be different and inspire them to behave differently”Thank you Simone for connecting, inspiring and making a difference!: (48:39)Mentioned resources:World Vision Australia: https://www.worldvision.com.au/ Change Coffee: https://www.changecoffee.com.au/ The Blessed Bean: https://theblessedbean.com.au/ Connect with Simone Dowding:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/simone.mitchelldowding/about Instagram: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simone-dowding/?originalSubdomain=au Join the Inspired Evolution Community:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/InspiredEvolution/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/InspiredEvo/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/InspiredEvolution/ Website: https://inspiredevolution.com/ Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/inspiredevolution. They converse about what her connection to God means and how it inspires her music, and how her own music has helped her grow. In this chapter you will learn how to make a profession out of something you love, how to connect to something that can inspire and create a positive shift in others, how to engender a positive belief in yourself, how to take courage and stand for what is right and how to communicate with people who want to deter your objective. Finally discover how music can help you vent your frustrations, how to do what you love despite challenges along the way and the importance of having somebody believing in you when you can’t believe in yourself. About Jasleen Aulakh:Jasleen Aulakh is a multifaceted professional singer who is also part of a project that breaks free from all confinement of language and genre to create soul stirring music. This band is a coming together of two young and highly talented artists, Polly Saghera as the lyricist, and her daughter Jasleen Aulakh, the lead singer and director. From slow rock, contemporary Sufi, country and folk music in several languages like Hindi, Punjabi, English and French, Jasleen sings with a mellifluous unique voice and leaves an indelible mark on the listener's mind. Her ambition is to fuse different styles of music into one.Polly’s lyrics are hauntingly beautiful and draw attention to all aspects of the fabric of life; it’s joys as well as it’s challenges. Both mother and daughter share the same goals to make meaningful music without sermonizing and to popularize folk music in India taking some of the great Sufi poets' philosophy. Having mainly been a 'One Woman Band' to begin with, Jasleen also performs with a band of talented musicians, and all their music is arranged and produced by Aman Nath in Mumbai. The songs are in several languages like Hindi, Punjabi, English and French. On youtube they have gained a lot of popularity, received veneration from all over the world and are all available on iTunes, Amazon, and Spotify.“Believe in yourself and keep going, that is the only way to make life beautiful and worth living”Tune In: Welcome Jasleen Aulakh to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00)When Jasleen realized music was going to be a big part of her life: (02:32)Ever since she was born Jasleen has loved music. She strongly believes that we all need to believe in a higher power to keep us grounded. Cave into the episode and discover what Sufism seeks to practice and how it inspired her music. “I dedicate my song to something I am passionate about”Music and artists that inspired her music: (10:27)For those who don’t know Sufi artists, take advantage and come across in this episode a couple of them and what they believe in.Art as a help to navigate the process of being revolutionary: (11:40)Art can definitely help anyone steer through a revolutionary process. Art gives us an outlook on how we are feeling during challenging times and can operate as a powerful weapon for uniting and educating people.About contemporary song “Aunty”: (12:23)A revolutionary humorous song that speaks to women’s rights and is against age-shaming of women. Dive in and listen to the song in Inspired Evolution’s mentioned resources.“I feel part of women’s emancipation is also the satisfaction of their vanity”Creative journey with mother stepping into music: (15:45)Jasleen was counselled by her mother in a crucial time of her life. “Once she started writing the songs for me, there was no more looking back”Challenges faced to be a musician: (18:20) Many are the challenges she faced to be a musician. Some from a sex perspective, challenges of being of another gender, and also cultural ones. People think music is meant to be a hobby and you can't make a career out of it. People don’t realize the work that goes into it and Jasleen, as a global professional singer with several fans on youtube, demonstrates all the contrary. “Keep on going as long as you believe in it”Advice on how to communicate with people who want to deter your objective: (22:12)Patience and belief are key! “As long as you believe in what you are doing, nobody can deter you from your objective.”What helped Jasleen imprint a positive belief in her mindset: (23:38) Amrit is so right when he says that the community and the loved ones have tremendous power. The value of somebody believing in you when you can’t believe in yourself, that is one of life’s greater gifts. Jaseleen quite often has felt down but her mother has always been there to lift her spirits and support her.“I won't accept defeat, so I will keep going”About Polly’s song “Munda Lambaraan Da”: (26:09)Polly and Jasleen have polished this version into a beautiful one. It is a song that has the essence of the tradition in it but adds the flavour of modernity. It has connected Amrit and his partner to the memories of when they first met. Dive into her youtube channel and share with us your favourite song!Standing in belief for something as an appreciation of faith: (29:05) Sufis broke free from the rigidity of other religions, basically whatever was rigid, something which demanded a lot of courage. As they go along, they cave into each chapter of her book, and have conversations about “upstairs and downstairs of the brain” as an easy concept for kids to understand what is going on, the benefits of cultivating optimism, about “The unfortunately fortunately game” and reframing the way we look at things, about the need of managing and naming emotions to tame them and about the four key places to point people to recognize strengths and purpose.Furthermore in this chapter you will learn how to connect with your kids, how your relationship can help them build resilience and understand why relationships are the cornerstone of resilience. Kari is driven to change the conversation about how we promote good mental health in children. She wants to help turn around the alarming statistics about depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide affecting an entire generation. She spends her time raising awareness about how adults can improve children’s mental fitness and resilience by speaking at conferences, workshops and public forums as well as through her blogs, articles, books and book chapters, and her white papers. Kari is the author of Raising Generation XXL and her recent book Raising a Mentally Fit Generation. “My dream is to one day put one of my books in each of the newborn bags at the hospital” Tune In: Welcome Kari Sutton to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00:00)About mental fitness: (00:04:08)Despression, anxiety, self harm, and suicide as well is impacting children more and more in the last 15 years. Children need the skills to develop their mental muscles and positive mental health in wellbeing. They need skills, attitudes and mindsets that allow them to flexibly adapt to both challenges and opportunities.“We are not giving children the skills to develop positive mental health in wellbeing”Evolving as a society in social structures: (00:05:50)The world is changing every day and very fast. Technology plays a big part in all of this. Kids use more and more electronic devices which makes the world come into our homes in a whole wild variety of ways. These kids, now more than ever, must be conscious about what is feeding their minds.“We have to be better at taking care of our own well being than when we were growing up” Resilience piece around boundaries: (00:07:13)Kids thrive better with boundaries. Adults must put boundaries on themselves too and not chronically go out and rescue them. The more you protect them, the less resilient they will be. Kids need to fail and know it is alright to do so. Your job is to hold them in a supportive space. Dive in and discover three simple things you can do every day to build resilience!“Kids need to be able to sit with disappointment, actually knowing that failing is ok”Optimum age to be learning things to face resilience: (00:11:56)From 0 to 8 kids are like sponges, they take everything in and there is no critical filter. Adults must be very careful with language and all what they say, because it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. “It is about how we live our lives, how we model these behaviours, and what we can do for our children”Describing the metaphor “upstairs and downstairs floors of the brain” (Chapter 1, Teaching Brain Basics): (00:16:58)Kari uses a fun and easy concept for kids to understand what she is talking about. She draws a brain to teach and explain. The upstairs part is where your thinking brain lives, the downstairs part is where your feeling brain lives and they both are connected. Cave in and see what happens when the downstairs brain takes over or when the stairs connecting the two no longer work.“Upstairs and downstairs is an easy concept for kids to understand what is going on”Benefits from cultivating optimism (Chapter 2, Cultivating optimism): (00:23:28)The book is based on tenets of positive psychology, and optimism and pessimism are explanatory styles. Developing an optimistic explanatory style in adults and kids helps them set goals, look to the future and make everything worthwhile.“When you have optimism, there is more hope”About “The unfortunately fortunately game”: (00:27:27)Kari refers to a fantastic quote by Alfred Wainwright: “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. Life is about how you look and reframe things. It is all about always looking for the silver lining.“Always create hope”Kids and adults managing emotions (Chapter 3, Managing emotions): (00:32:05)According to Dan Siegel, you must name emotions to tame them. Kari talks about emotional intelligence, which is self awareness and self management, both heart of emotional well being and psychological well being. Tune in and discover how to label your emotions and manage your actions to external events and strong feelings without aggressive behaviour“Name emotions to tame them”Kids capacity in having emotional intelligence: (00:35:46)Dive in and discover a beautiful and most fun way Kari teaches kids to recognize their emotions and work on them!“That is what your brain looks like when downstairs is in control”About feelings which are acceptable and behaviours that are not: (00:39:07)Love and acceptance must be for all children. Bad behaviour can be changed and kids can learn .There is a space between stimulus and response. This space gives them the choice in how to respond. “I will love the child and accept the child no matter what”Doubling down on strengths (Chapter 4, Recognizing people’s strengths): (00:43:00)Every single one of us is unique. We all have come to this world with something that is only ours. Tap-into that and reveal why you are here. In this episode you will find out the four key places Kari and Amrit point people to identify strengths and uncover their purpose in life. Strengths are a positive resource a child will have for their entire life“We each have a song to sing”The importance of making friends (Chapter 5, Making friends): (00:50:19)We become healthier enhancing social connections. Kids need to know how to get along with other people. They need to socialize like everyone else otherwise life will be difficult. “Relationships are the cornerstone of our well being”Encouraging kindness and empathy into connections (Chapter 6, Encouraging kindness and empathy): (00:52:54)Kindness is one of the most powerful things one can have. It even increases self-esteem. We need to create a ripple effect of kindness! In regards to empathy, when you see another person suffering, you might be able to instantly put yourself in their shoes and feel sympathy for what they are going through and even help.“If you can chose to be anything, chose to be kind”Kids modelling actually what they see (Chapter 7, Fostering gratitude): (00:56:15)Children learn by watching everyone around them, especially their parents. The whole idea is to train parents to foster kind and empathetic habits in their kids. These habits will be carried within their souls for the rest of their lives. There are many ways to show kindness. Discover in this episode how you can help your children be helpful this christmas or help people having a bad time through Foodbank Australia.“We are modelling the behaviour they will have for the rest of their lives”A chapter in disguise about the growth mindsets (Chapter 8, Learning to fail): (01:02:39) In this chapter discover the importance of letting your kids experience failure“I don’t use the word failing, I use the first attempt in learning”Working on self mastery at a young age (Chapter 9 Working on self mastery): (01:08:56)Children need to know they can do things themselves. As parents and educators we must give them the time to do so. “As educators and parents allow kids to experience self mastery”About making memories together: (01:10:46)Kari was inspired and moved by kids from Camp Quality and her friend Bronnie Ware’s book to finish her book with “making memories”.Dive in and listen to Kari’s most beautiful and touching words about why she ended her book this way. These words are profoundly motivating and for sure will help you create special moments for your children to look back and remember them.
