SHELTER FROM THE STORM

In the studio with me today is Wayne Chimenti, a retired tall boat captain, and an active program director and mentor to youth involved in The Community Boat Project of Port Hadlock, a maritime community in Washington State. Wayne is accompanied by a few of his interns working on the Shelter From The Storm, program, a subset of the larger organization that is busy building tiny homes.I found Wayne and his group of merry builders when trolling through on-line classified ads late one evening. I ran across a tiny home for sale that caught my fancy. When I made further inquiries, not only did I learn about the item that had been posted, I found about an incredible group of people working to better the lives of students through some amazing experiential learning. I had to have these folks share their work and their mission with you on LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah. KRISTIN CHENOWETH

With me today on LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah, is Emmy and Tony Award winner singer, actor, educator, and downright beauty, inside and out, Ms. Kristin Chenoweth. I became a fan of Kristin's after watching her perform on Broadway in Wicked. In fact, I saw her in that role at least three times! Kristin has a new album out, "For the Girls," a celebration of music’s most passionate women from one of Broadway’s most vibrant stars. It includes songs such as “The Way We Were,” (Streisand) “When I Fall in Love” (Garland) and - my favorite - "Desperado" (Ronstadt). If you're lucky, you can catch Kristin this November at one of only 8 performances on Broadway as she premiers the songs from this new hit album. In addition to her singing and acting career, Kristin's heart is in coaching and supporting the arts through the Kristin Chenoweth Arts and Education Foundation. This started after the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, in her home town of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, named a theater after her. Kristin felt a responsibility to uphold the honor they had placed in her and started teaching a yearly master class to a few high school and college students. That evolved into the Kristin Chenoweth Broadway Bootcamp, supporting 50 students from all over the nation. She's now in the process of building a creative arts center that will cater to the underserved youth of Oklahoma providing training in Crafts, Drawing, Design, and Writing - as well as serving dinner to it's enrollees! Kristin is doing her part, to make the world a better place one heart at a time and I am so happy that we were given this time to get to know her better! ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CATHY PARKER

Cathy Parker was a bank employee, a wife, and a mother of 4 student athletes. She didn't have a lot of money, or power, and had ZERO knowledge of artificial athletic turf... but when her children called to her to watch a documentary about a  town in the northern reaches of Alaska, struggling to keep kids safe, engaged, and in school, she took action!Cathy answered a whisper in her heart, which led to a whole lotta shouting on the sidelines! Her book, "Northern Lights" tells the story of how she was able to get an artificial athletic field, purchased, transported, and installed in a town with no roads in or out. And, how she changed countless lives in the process, but none so much as her own.Northern Lights was my book club pick for August - check it out on my web site - and join us for this inspiring episode of LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah! ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

KERRY TYMCHUK

Today I welcome a guest into my studio who has spent his life in public service. Once upon a childhood, he was my neighbor, my classmate, and my friend. Today he is everyone's neighbor and friend. Kerry Tymchuk has worn many professional hats - first as a young public prosecutor, then on to several roles in Washington DC, and then back to Oregon where he is now the Director of the Oregon Historical Society. He's the son of a small town merchant/mayor, and a teacher; their attendance at every community meeting and event were almost guaranteed. Kerry, and his brother Keith, grew up with that ideal of service and have now become the models their parents once were. Keith (who I may have had a little tiny crush on...) became a teacher and returned to our home town where he too has served as mayor, and together with his wife, Jennifer (also a teacher), and children, are enmeshed in the fabric of the community.  In between official roles, Kerry has co-written 8 books with individuals who have had big impacts on our world, became a 4 time Jeopardy! champion, and served on numerous boards and causes, his favorite being the Special Olympics.  He is a husband to another mover and shaker, Becky, who is the president of their local school board, and a father to two young adults just now making their way in the world. His message to us? Find your place to serve, you always get more than you give! And please remember, "civility and decency still matter."  Thank you for joining us today, I hope you feel inspired! ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ELTON JOHN

I fell in love with Elton John's music waaaaaay back in the day with hits like Honkey Cat, Island Girl, and Crocodile Rock... I've played his songs, been to his concerts, and even had the chance to interview him a time or two, but NEVER did I have a sense that I really knew the man behind the giant sequined sunglasses until I watched the biopic, Rocket Man!On this episode of LOVE SOMEONE, Elton and I have an absolutely lovely conversation about the movie, and how closely it resembles his life, his music - old and new - his past addictions and current sobriety, the changes of perspective and motivations that children bring, and of course, his Farewell Concert Tour. What and incredible man!Join us, (and listen for this gem, "The philosophy of getting sober is helping others." Amen!) ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

DELILAH: Back to School with Beloved Educators

It's back to school time around the country, so I thought there would be no better way to kick-off September than with an episode honoring educators! I dialed up a couple of teachers that have had a huge impact on my life; Coach Jim Wells, who was an history teacher and an athletic coach for many many years in my home town of Reesdport, Oregon, and who, with his wife Mary Ann, also a retired teacher, continues to be a vital presence in our community. And Mike Allen, choral director of the high school three of my kids attended. He shares his passion for music with his students by creating some of the MOST AMAZING programs including an annual Madrigal Feaste and Broadway production that give students an opportunity to showcase their creative abilities as well as their musical talents. Please join me on this episode of LOVE SOMEONE with Delilah, as we honor educators for all they do and all they are! ~ Delilah   Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

KIM BOGUCKI

Joining me today is a good friend, a career police officer, and the co-founder of an amazing organization called The IF Project; a collaboration of law enforcement, currently and previously incarcerated adults and community partners focused on intervention, prevention and reduction in the number of women incarceration and recidivism. The project is centered around individuals sharing their personal stories about incarceration. As Kim says, we ALL have stories, the felon, the police, the person you're standing next to. Finding the common denominator in our stories and tapping into the human connection, will help us to figure out the "what IF?" and take the steps necessary to change a life. Join us for a conversation that may challenge your perception of incarcerated women and hopefully inspire you to be someone that's the "IF" to another's story.  ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

GLORIA GAYNOR

"I Will Survive" has been the empowered woman's anthem for over 40 years, since the disco tune was recorded by Gloria Gaynor in 1978. (The year yours truly graduated high school!) There have been many times in my life that I've drawn strength from it's lyrics and fun, funky disco vibe to get me through rough patches, so imagine my delight at being able to tell the voice behind the message how much her music means to me! The inimitable Gloria Gaynor sat down with me recently to chat, and ooooooh boy, did we have a lot to talk about! Mainly, her fabulous new gospel album, "Testimony," just out! Full of fresh tracks, many featuring  folks I'm privileged to call friends, like Bart Millard, Jason Crabb, Yolanda Adams, and Mike Farris...  the music is somehow still familiar and eminently satisfying! Come on in and sit down with us, then put "Testimony" on your play list! ~ Delilah Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
