Ep 85 - Queerly Beloved w Blaire Bohlen

If you’ve been paying attention to the news cycle over the past few weeks, you know that there’s been a lot happening. Fascism in Brazil, anti-semitism, bombs in the mail and the US Army coming to the border to confront refugees. In all of that, there was also some important and troubling stuff from the Prez about possible changes to Title IX that would narrowly define an individual’s gender. While all of this stuff is important, we don’t want the impending danger for transpeople to get lost in the mix. So, in light of all that, this week we’re talking with Blaire Bohlen, a talented artist and all around great person who identifies as trans non-binary. Blaire has had a pretty wild journey through Christianity, especially after being fired from the campus ministry organization InterVarsity for being bi in 2015, leading them to have some really interesting and helpful insights on the damaging pathologies within Christianity and evangelicalism especially. Blaire is also involved in a neat thing called the Reformation Project, which according to its website "is a Bible-based, Christian grassroots organization that works to promote inclusion of LGBTQ people by reforming church teaching on sexual orientation and gender identity. Our vision is of a global church that fully affirms LGBTQ people.” They do grassroots organizing and education and have a ton of great resources. Check out Blaire's artwork and other shenanigans at blarecreative.info. For real, check it out. It's Very Good. Also find Blaire on twitter @blaire_bohlen. Ep 84 - Kim Il-Sung and Christianity

Hey did you know Kim Il-Sung taught Sunday School at a Methodist church once? Or that his parents were Christians? Or that his uncle was a Presbyterian pastor who served in the revolutionary government? Well thanks to a new article by Dae Young Ryu called "Kim Il-Sung and Christianity in North Korea," now you can learn all about that and the changing shape of Christianity in the DPRK. The article appears in the Journal of Church and State, and was just published this month! Also in this episode: Matt remembers smuggling Bibles into North Korea at church camp, and it turns out American imperialism is still Very Bad. Music by Amaryah Armstrong and theillalogicalspoon.

ep 83 - The Artistic Universe of Jon McNaughton

ok, so I can't promise that this episode is as fun to listen to as it was to record, but we're allowed a bad ep every once and while right? In this episode of The Magnificast Matt and Dean talk about socialist realism, kitsch, and the aestheticization of politics in the work of Jon Mcnaughton.
