Nintendo Playing With Toys

TCW Podcast Episode 155 Nintendo Playing With Toys   In our final look at Nintendo in the early years, we see the transition into toys and electronic games.  Nintendo brought over some popular western games such as Twister in partnership with Milton Bradly.  The legendary engineer Gunpei Yokoi invented some of Nintendo's first toys.  These toys included; the Ultra Hand, the Ultra Machine, and the Ultra Scope.  Nintendo progressed further into electronic entertainment by focusing on light gun technology with photovoltaic cells.  The home light gun games were a hit.  Nintendo decided to develop a larger version to be used in bowling alleys.  However, the oil embargo of the 1970s caused such economic turmoil that most orders were canceled.  It is at this point that Nintendo refactored the technology for use in the traditional coin-op space.   TCW 037 - Nintendo and Gunpei Yokoi: http://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/nintendo-and-gunpei-yokoi/ Nintendo Rabbit Coaster Game: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/02/nintendo-rabbit-coaster-game-mid-60s.html Time Bomb Commercial 1964: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfHdq-pTDuQ Twister 50 Years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pysdD9JSs2w How Johnny Carson Saved Twister: https://www.history.com/news/how-johnny-carson-saved-twister Before Mario Nintendo Ultra Hand: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/03/nintendo-ultra-hand-1966.html Before Mario Nintendo Ultra Machine: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/03/nintendo-ultra-machine-1967-1974.html Nintendo Ultra Machine TV Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL7QAVCgF64 Before Mario Nintendo Blocks: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/10/nintendo-n-block-introduction-1968-71.html Nintendo N&B Block Ringer Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9cLRoiJAFw Before Mario Nintendo Cotton Candy Machine: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/09/nintendo-candy-machine-1970.html Before Mario Nintendo Photocopier: http://blog.beforemario.com/2012/12/nintendo-copilas-part-2-1971.html Before Mario Ultra Scope: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/06/nintendo-automatic-ultra-scope-ultra.html Nintendo Automatic Ultra Scope: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY9QFOnlatc Ultra Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApGnXOIZB0o Nintendo Love Tester: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3vUwM3CO3Y Distilled Water VS Tap Water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hQh8eg30IY How Solar/Photovoltaic Cells Work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_q6LRgKpTw Before Mario Kôsenjû SP: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/02/light-gun-games-kousenjuu-sp-and.html Before Mario Electro Safari and Bird Targets: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/02/nintendo-electro-safari-and-electro.html Nintendo Roulette Commercial: https://twitter.com/nintendomemo/status/913881627704676352 Before Mario Nintendo Jumping Bottle: http://blog.beforemario.com/2012/05/nintendo-jumping-bottle-1970.html Before Mario Duck Hunt: http://blog.beforemario.com/2012/09/nintendo-kousenjuu-duck-hunt-1976.html Before Mario Types of Guns and Riffles: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/04/nintendo-kousenjuu-guns-and-rifles-sp.html Kôsenjû Custom Lever Action Rifle: http://blog.beforemario.com/2011/03/nintendo-custom-lever-action-rifle-and.html Pictures of the Laser Clay Shooting System: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFddF9nKUq8 TCW 067 - The Birth of the Japanese Consoles: http://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-birth-of-the-japanese-consoles/   New episodes on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book is available for preorder and should be released through CRC Press in December 2019: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. Grand Theft Auto 2 by 3

TCW Podcast Episode 152 - Grand Theft Auto 2 by 3   With the groundwork of the series laid down, we continue our look into the franchise of Grand Theft Auto.  GTA 2 went to market during a transition phase with Rockstar, Take-Two Interactive, and DMA (Soon to be Rockstar North), sorting out who would deal with what.  GTA 2 was a modest success, but it is GTA 3 that made Rockstar and Take-Two take off.  The gritty storytelling, realism, and relatable real-world themes made GTA 3 a blockbuster hit.  Further refinements to the system lead to the sequels GTA: Vice City and GTA San Andreas.  Each expansion faced controversy, especially San Andreas with the infamous HOT COFFEE!   Level Zero - The History of Sega Part 1: https://levelzeropod.com/2021/09/16/the-history-of-sega-part-1/ Level Zero - The History of Sega Part 2: https://levelzeropod.com/2021/10/29/the-history-of-sega-part-2/ Level Zero - The History of Sega Part 3: https://levelzeropod.com/2021/11/11/the-history-of-sega-part-3/ Modo Historia Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk5gSLIKxZs Video Game History Hour EP 60 - Computer Space: https://gamehistory.org/ep-60-computer-space/   GTA 2 Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9ZZX1uO7Hg Driver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRNt0rpD0V0 Chatterbox FM - GTA 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lPytfSy-04 Shenmue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8RpDgxAyKI Goodfellas Movie Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ilzidi_J8Q Casino Movie Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJXDMwGWhoA Mean Streets Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9xHpS10CZ0 Reservoir Dogs Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vayksn4Y93A Pulp Fiction Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7EdQ4FqbhY The Sopranos Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2X4UhSPA5d4 Heat Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GfZl4kuVNI Grant Theft Auto 3 - Full In Game Movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGWTTCmk_M8 Jordan Harbinger Show - Sammy "The Bull" Gravano | Mafia Underboss Part 1: https://www.jordanharbinger.com/sammy-the-bull-gravano-mafia-underboss-part-one/ Jordan Harbinger Show - Sammy "The Bull" Gravano | Mafia Underboss Part 2 https://www.jordanharbinger.com/sammy-the-bull-gravano-mafia-underboss-part-two/ The Jordan Harbinger Show -Anthony S. Gottlieb Part 2

TCW Podcast Episode 150 - Gottlieb Part 2   In part two we look at the further development of Gottlieb as a coin-op company, and how they established themselves during the 50s through the 70's.  Eventually acquired by Columbia Pictures. Gottlieb would start making small steps into the video game space.  Though many inside the company still viewed themselves as a pinball company, the shrinking pinball market necessitated a change.  When Columbia was purchased by Coca-Cola the shift into video games was made more of a priority.  One of the notable hits of this time was the game Q*bert.  A character that would even get a short run cartoon.  Unfortunately with other failures in the video game space, and the collapse of the industry as a whole Gottlieb ceased to be in the mid 80's.   How bowling Pinsetters work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iod6uwUGM2E Shuffleboard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpNTY-0fhps Shuffle Alley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfHe6HKFrY8 Gittlieb Duette: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmBYrGOYx3M Flipper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn-AMpfQ-xE Spirit of 76: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkTJweVDOR8 Royal Flush: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU4XEwO0-jI Close Encounters of the Third Kind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW-mC01af_8 Charlie's Angels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jtamJzTPPU Amazing Spiderman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM02icGtUBI No Man's Land: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roDcKaYrid4 New York New York: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xbiQ3Zc4b0 Black Hole: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Mif-oaCwN0 Caveman Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPm0pmmBp0Y Caveman Cabinet & Electronics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A_F00nqi5w Reactor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QKuINAQyQI Q*bert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKIbhaQfs-A M.C. The Mysteries of Imagic

TCW Podcast Episode 148 - The Mysteries of Imagic   We look at the company Imagic.  This company only lasted a few short years during the lead up to, and through the crash.  The company is notable for innovative packaging, and creating games that pushed the graphical fidelity of the Atari VCS to new levels!  They were also one of the first companies to use graphics on a computer to then be translated to code on a console.  A feat famously used by Rare in the creation of Donkey Kong Country.  Unfortunately through a lot of bad luck Imagic was unable to go public due to the Time Warner earnings report two days prior.  This lead to the company's downfall.   Sprint 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuPEoLkVwtI Touch Me Arcade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGY-wXvjWa0 Atlantis High-Res Scan: https://archive.org/details/AtlantisAtari2600HiResScans Cosmic Ark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKYRsvy4pHg Demon Attack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deEgbiAHaGs Atlantis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1bZGlW6708 Atlantis Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVcxOA9iMOw Cosmic Ark Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-gXCpJfx5M Demon Attack Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TlLS54t6JY Star Voyager Commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YQiCdHfc2I   New episodes on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book is available for preorder and should be released through CRC Press in December 2019: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward.
