In an effort to help those suffering from mold injuries, we created a free resource, The Exposing Mold Podcast, where Erik, Kealy, and Alicia meet weekly to discuss the growing topic of toxic mold and other environmental concerns with top experts in the field. Arnold Mann has been writing about public health and medicine for 30 years, as a journalist, author, and co-author, working with physicians and scientists to help them tell the stories of their work. Mann has also authored books on environmental illness, autism, and nutritional approaches to the practice of medicine, as well as physician memoirs. His cover stories for Time and USA Weekend magazines, most notably his investigative reporting on the toxic mold threat in homes, schools and the workplace, earned him recognition as one of the nation’s leading environmental journalists, and keynote speaker at the EPA Healthy Indoor Air Conferences. He authored the book “They’re Poisoning Us,” which dives into how environmental slights impact human health. Mr. Mann has also written extensively for the publications of the National Institutes of Health, where he served from 2004 to 2005 as personal writer for the Director of the National Cancer Institute and oversaw publication of the Institute’s Annual Progress Report to Congress. Episode 19 - Healthcare Risks and Patient Safety with Dr. John James
Dr. John James earned his Ph.D. in pathology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1981. He has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology since 1986, and has spent 25 years as NASA’s Chief Toxicologist. Prior to that, he worked 8 years studying chemical warfare defense at the Chemical Research and Development Center in Aberdeen Maryland. He retired in early 2014 to spend full efforts on improving patient safety by being an advocate and activist due to the death of his 19-year old son that resulted from uninformed and unethical medical care by cardiologists in Waco, TX. As a result of this tragic incident, he started, “Patient Safety America,” an organization dedicated to educating ordinary citizens about overuse, misuse, and underuse of medical services and about healthcare risks. Dr. James is an affiliate of the Consumers Union Safe Patient Project, which has become the Patient Safety Action Network, was a member of the State of Texas Healthcare Acquired Infection and Preventable Adverse Event Advisory Panel (2010-2015) was a Project Leader for the Healthcare Justice and also served on expert panels by the National Quality Forum, Leapfrog, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He has also been an invited speaker to many patient advocacy forums and has won a plethora of awards for his pivotal work. In addition he has written the book, “A Sea of Broken Hearts” to teach others the importance of being their own patient advocate to mitigate medical errors. Dr. José G. Montoya completed his medical degree with honors at Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia. He is currently the Co-Director of the National Reference Laboratory for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Toxoplasmosis, the “Dr. Jack S. Remington Laboratory for Specialty Diagnostics (JSRLSD)” where more than 21,000 highly specialized laboratory tests are performed in more than 8,000 patients every year. JSRLSD is the national reference CLIA-certified-laboratory for the FDA, NIH, CDC, USDA, and clinicians throughout North America and the world over. During his 29 year-tenure at Stanford University, he made and published several observations and discoveries, won numerous teaching awards, and founded the Immunocompromised Host Service (Infectious Diseases) (2001) and the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome clinical and research programs (2007). He has published more than 200 articles and book chapters in peer review journals and books. Dr. Montoya has received 14 school-wide teaching awards at Stanford (12) and Tulane (2). He initiated, participated in, executed, and led more 30 clinical trials, Phase I and Phase II.
