034 - Death of Tradition in Medicine

Besides the explosion of medical company monopolies, not much has changed with medicine in my lifetime. My boomer parents took pills for everything and they encouraged me to. mention of a headache gets an ibuprofen, rather than a glass of water. Even at a young age I was obsessed with primitive people and I wondered how they survived without our modern medicine, or even toothpaste. It was only once I was much older that I realized that much of the problems we have are due to our modern life and they way we live, and our culture decided the best solution was to pop pills and make $400 rubber insoles rather than actually change the culture to just not create those problems that need industrial solutions. I’m Sam and this is the Illegitimate Scholar Podcast. The weekly cultural anthropology and history podcast that makes sense of our senseless world through indigenous and historical examples, academic methods in social science, and a perspective not limited by the crushing restrictions that come with traditional academia and public schoolsToday we are going to talk traditional medicine, the pros and cons and what it can do and can’t do. Then where our modern health system comes from, what the nature of our health culture is, and why people are so fat and miserable in the west.Discord:https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjAudio Podcast:https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com:https://twitter.com/ill_scholarAs an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases “The Horse, the Wheel, and Language”::https://amzn.to/3BK7gsgIn Defense of Food:https://amzn.to/427inpUAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial: https://amzn.to/3TJOARA#anthropology #podcasts #videopodcast #history #historypodcasts #health #medicalanthropology #biomedicine #homeopathy #culture #tradition #traditionalmedicine #indigenous #spiritual #wholehealth #shaman #indigenousmedicineDiscord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

033 - Caffeine and Capitalism: A Culture's Choice of Drug

Indigenous cultures often have hallucinogenic traditions, from Meso-America, to Africa, the Pacific, and indigenous Europe. The United States, Spain, and Japan, just as diverse, all drink similar amounts of coffee while being very different cultures. Why do these cultures that differ so much share these traits, and what do these, and the use of other drugs tell us about the values and customs of a culture? I’m Sam and this is the Illegitimate Scholar Podcast. The weekly cultural anthropology and history podcast that tries to make sense of our senseless world through indigenous and historical examples, academic methods in social science, and a perspective not limited by the crushing restrictions that come with traditional academia and public schools.Today we are going to find out the similarities in a few indigenous hallucinogenic traditions, and why these similar traditions thrived in these very different cultures. Then, what makes alcohol tied to settled life. What makes alcohol give way to caffeine as the main drug of the west, and what are the consequences of this shift are. Finally, what the drugs of the last few decades have to say about the state of our modern culture.Discord:https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjAudio Podcast:https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com:https://twitter.com/ill_scholarBOOKS“The Horse, the Wheel, and Language”::https://amzn.to/3BK7gsg“Uncommon Ground: The History of Coffee and how it changed the worldhttps://amzn.to/43dxFtZAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial: https://amzn.to/3TJOARAAs an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases #podcast #history #anthropology #culture #socialanthropology #culturalanthropology #politicalscience #geopolitics #indigenous #politics #libertarian #libertyDiscord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

032 - Symbols Place in Culture

In this episode I look at the perception of different symbols, like the confederate flag, American flag, Pepe the Frog, is influenced by those who hold power. I discuss what symbols actually represent and the power in those symbols themselves, as well as the ability to decide for others, through institutional power, what a symbol represents. We discuss the racist term, "latinx" as well. Discord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

031 - Cycles of Crisis, Order, Reform Part 2

Part 2 from last week, episode 030. This episode recaps the cycles of institutional and socio-economic change from George Friedman's "Storm Before the Calm". This episode builds on last week  to question what will happen to the United States in the coming years based on Friedman's theory. I will likely not use this format in the future. Let me know on discord what topics you want to see covered. I highly recommend his book"Storm Before the Calm" - George Friedman:https://amzn.to/3A7Pa2yAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial:https://amzn.to/3TJOARAAs an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchase#history #anthropology #culturalanthropology #geopolitics #Americanhistory #americanculture #culture #collapse #civilization #books #philosophy #socio-economic #cycles #historiography #socialscience #modernhistory Discord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

030 - Cycles of Crisis, Order, Reform Part 1

This episode is a little bit different and will have to be split up into two parts. This week, I discuss the Concept of Institutional and socio-economic cycles. These are cycles identified by geopolitical analyst George Friedman in his book, "Storm Before the Calm". The United States, in his opinion, goes through stages of Institutions (every 80 years) and socio-economics (every 50 years). This episode is spent introducing the concept of these cycles and discussing the cycles of American history so far. Next week I will go in-depth into the current cycles we are in, how George Friedman thinks we will be better off afterward, and what my own thoughts are on what the future will bring. I will also compare to other examples of times of reform and change in other cultures. I highly recommend his book"Storm Before the Calm" - George Friedman:https://amzn.to/3A7Pa2yAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial:https://amzn.to/3TJOARAAs an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchase#history #anthropology #culturalanthropology #geopolitics #Americanhistory #americanculture #culture #collapse #civilization #books #philosophy #socio-economic #cycles #historiography #socialscience #modernhistory Discord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

029 - Stories & Myths in Culture

In this episode I discuss myths and stories of different cultures, such as origin stories and heroic tales. I discuss how the traits that are encouraged and traits that are discouraged reflect the values of that story's society. Formats of stories are compared, including cave paintings, oral traditions, Roman plays, and modern American movies. These differing formats are also reflective of technology and, by extension, culture. I discuss a few examples of cultural stories and how those stories reflect their own cultures and changed over time. At the end I discuss the significance of Hollywood movies, how they've changed over the last few decades and what it means that "black" actors are playing "white" characters. The stories we tell are important. #podcast #history #anthropology #culturalanthropology #myths #cultural #polynesian #iliad #ancientgreece #classicalera #stories #mulan #hollywood #culturewars #thelittlemermaidDiscord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

028 - Culture & History of Taxes

What is the nature and origin of taxation? How has taxation differed over time and place? How does our conception of what taxation is normalize it and what other perceptions of taxation are possible? I discuss ancient tax systems and how taxes differ from tribute. I discuss how taxes are framed in a modern society and the difference between a regressive and progressive tax system. Audio Podcast:https://pod.link/1650280020Discord:https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjAs an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchasesMystery Book::https://amzn.to/3U2VKQU“Economic History of the World since 1400”(use audible credit, do not pay full price):https://amzn.to/3zqg5pRAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial:https://amzn.to/3TJOARA#podcast #history #politics #anthropology #taxes #economichistory #ancienthistory #libertarian #illegitimatescholar #culturalanthropology #politicalscience #socialscience #socialstudies #libterty #libertarian #libertarianpodcasts #podcasts #Amricanculture #culture #geopolitics #hsitoryoftaxes #historypodcasts #historyfacts #historical #Rome #ancientRome #ancientgreece #Romanhistory #Persianhistory #persia #socialconstructs Discord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

027 - Weaponization of Law

Why do people really get arrested? There is more going on than just someone committing a crime. Individuals and organizations have been targeted for prosecution because of their political views by the IRS. Laws and justifications have been created for thousands of years to arrest people for essentially nothing. The US legal code today is so vast that no single person could possibly know all laws. Listen to this episode for how the government and people in it weaponize the law for their purposes and goals. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases“Three Felonies a Day”:https://amzn.to/3z7DwEbAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial:https://amzn.to/3TJOARASubscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw?sub_confirmation=1https://pod.link/1650280020Audio Podcast:https://pod.link/1650280020#podcast #history #politics #anthropology #law #Americanhistory #civillaw #criminallaw #illegitimatescholar #anthropology #culturalanthropology #equaljustice #weaponizedlegislation #politicalscience #socialscience #socialstudies #podcasts #Amricanculture #culture #socioculturalanthropology #judiciary #judicial #courtsystem #geopolitics #massincarceration #arrest #arrested #DOJ #justice #nowarbutclasswarDiscord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw

Our culture is in crisis and I don’t trust woke universities and authoritarian governments to give us the solution. 026 - State of Public Ed in 2023

Public Education in 2023 in America is in crisis. The schools are increasingly not teaching. Teachers are increasingly overworked, staff shortages are at an all time high. Teachers quitting is at an all time high. Administrators increasingly do not provide teachers with tools or support to effectively discipline students to even create a reasonably safe environment. This is reflected in statistics and anecdotal evidence I share in this episode. Listen here for statistics and commentary on the state of public education and public school teachers in 2023.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases“Dumbing Us Down”:https://amzn.to/3FWI8kxAudible AUDIOBOOKS, free trial:https://amzn.to/3TJOARA  Reach me on Discord,https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6Jj #podcast #culture #videopodcast #history #schoolchoice #homeschool #Americanhistory #publiceducation #publicschools #educationhistory #caste #classsytem #anthropology #culturalanthropology #educationisascam #historyfacts #historical #antiwoke #woke  #anthropology #freespeech #freedom #libsoftiktok Discord: https://discord.gg/KhJgpMj6JjPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/IllegitimateScholar Audio Podcast: https://pod.link/1650280020 Twitter.com: https://twitter.com/ill_scholarYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRH77S0fVLmAZU4xLnAxuvw
