Ep 208 – Chiari Malformation: “I Have a Client Who . . .” Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner
A client can’t find a massage therapist, because they have a condition that no one knows how to work with: Chiari malformation. This is a problem in the spatial relationships between the cerebellum, brainstem, and the foramen magnum. One patient describes it as, “My brain is too big for my head.” But is massage really off the table for people with Chiari malformation? Probably not! Listen in for more on what this condition means, and how to figure out where our work fits. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but as a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you — not ON you — to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity. Massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, as well as teaching . I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, CA., where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. Ep 199 – Nutritious Movement with Katy Bowman
People think that if they’re exercising regularly, they’ve got their bases covered. But is there more to movement than just routine exercise? In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren sit down with biomechanist Katy Bowman to discuss the concept of “movement nutrition,” alignment concepts for massage therapists, different kinds of movements our bodies should be doing each day, and what movement exercises MTs could incorporate in their daily lives. Bestselling author, speaker, and leader in the Movement movement biomechanist Katy Bowman is changing the way we move and think about our need for movement. Bowman teaches movement globally and speaks about sedentarism and movement ecology to academic and scientific audiences. Her work has been featured in diverse media, including the Today Show, CBC Radio One, the Seattle Times, and Good Housekeeping. One of Maria Shriver’s “Architects of Change” and an America Walks “Woman of the Walking Movement,” Bowman has worked with companies like Patagonia, Nike, and Google, as well as a wide range of nonprofits and other communities, sharing her “move more, move more body parts, move more for what you need” message. Her movement education company, Nutritious Movement, is based in Washington State, where she lives with her family. Her book, the bestselling Move Your DNA, highlighted the importance of distinguishing between movement and exercise and has revolutionized the way movement is now being discussed. This book along with her others—Movement Matters, Dynamic Aging, Grow Wild, Simple Steps to Foot Pain Relief, Diastasis Recti, Don’t Just Sit There, Whole Body Barefoot, and Alignment Matters—has been critically acclaimed and translated worldwide.
